Hail Adventurers! I've just recently joined Excelsior and wanted to say hello. I've been back and playing UO for about 8 months and I'm looking for a new server. The server I'm currently on shall go un-named but suffice it to say the culture lately has been very toxic. Looking for a friendly community to join and I've had a couple people tell me about UOEX.
Overall I'm looking for an active playerbase, responsive staff and a sense of community. I've played both Pre and Post Trammel over the years and started on Great Lakes in 1997. I was in the Counselor program on Pac for a while but played all my accounts on GL.
A few questions for the community:
1 - Is there much griefing here or do players generally get along / try to help one another?
2 - Is there room for housing?
3 - I'm totally lost with no skill cap on char development. I'd assume the primary reason you'd create additional chars given no skill cap is as helpers? For instance, if I was working up a crafter, normally I'd also have a separate resource gatherer so I could be chopping wood while my crafter was macroing carpenty. Any guides / feedback on charecter builds? What is complimentary together?
4 - Does magery really suck here? Do we have the ability to leverage Inscription / Poisoning bonuses on mages? Why wouldn't I train up magery?
5 - Dueling... is there a community for it or is it a feature set not many use here?
6 - Is this the primary form of communication? Does the shard leverage Discord or IRC?
7 - Any other things I should be thinking about?
Thanks in advance and I look forward to meeting many of you in game!

I'll try to answer what i can
1 - Is there much griefing here or do players generally get along / try to help one another?
Bulling, griefing is not tolerated, some disagreements will happen and as long as you don't get too crazy your good.
We all get along for the most part cuz we are AWESOME!
2 - Is there room for housing?
Lots of room, just don't expect to put up a castle
3 - I'm totally lost with no skill cap on char development. I'd assume the primary reason you'd create additional chars given no skill cap is as helpers? No skill cap at all so one char can do it all. You cant have multiple accounts per ip address and one account cannot have 2 toons logged in at the same time obviously. So no to the seconds part.
4 - Does magery really suck here? Do we have the ability to leverage Inscription / Poisoning bonuses on mages? Why wouldn't I train up magery?
Train it up and its complimentary skills too, weapons do far more damage then spells can. FARRRR MORE
Mages are all but useless for fighting unless you tailor them with exactly right gear wise, then they still suck just not as bad.
5 - Dueling... is there a community for it or is it a feature set not many use here?
Unsure, but I don't think so.
6 - Is this the primary form of communication? Does the shard leverage Discord or IRC?
We have a discord I believe, in game chat system works great. Use [C to chat in game
7 - Any other things I should be thinking about?
Why don't the squirrels in my head like me?
Oh and read the wiki page, once done reread it and maybe one more time
Thanks in advance and I look forward to meeting many of you in game![/quote]
Hope i helped a bit, and again welcome!

The main purpose for Alts is for gathering Bulk order Deeds. There may be 1 or 2 other smaller reasons. Bulk order deeds are for crafters.

Griefing is largely prevented by the system and, where the system doesn't prevent it, punished by the server admins.DIVETX wrote:1 - Is there much griefing here or do players generally get along / try to help one another?
Yes. You won't easily find space for a castle, keep or 18x18 but everything else is readily available.DIVETX wrote:2 - Is there room for housing?
Alts are for getting bods, expressing different play styles, etc.DIVETX wrote:3 - I'm totally lost with no skill cap on char development. I'd assume the primary reason you'd create additional chars given no skill cap is as helpers?

This is not allowed here. You may have one account per person and one character in the game at a time.
My observations:DIVETX wrote: Any guides / feedback on charecter builds? What is complimentary together?
Everybody starts as or quickly shifts to a tamer. Taming is easy to build up here (crafting pet supplies) and player-bred pets (which you can buy and eventually breed yourself) are much stronger than you at the beginning. 1000 hp/1000 str strong.
Eventually everybody changes to being a warrior as they reach 220 dex and build up a set of relayers. 220 dex is instant heal with bandages so you essentially survive anything that doesn't one-hit you. Relayers give you major bonuses to stats and damage. Once this combination kicks in, nothing else competes.
Magery does not suck but it is very much a support skill, not a primary play style. You'll find a number of conveniences like lower reagent cost (LRC) gear and spellcaster keys that can hold up to 60k of each reagent weightless.DIVETX wrote:4 - Does magery really suck here? Dueling is possible but most folks are here because they don't enjoy PVP and even if they did, relayers and similar bonuses wildly unbalance PVP to the point where dueling just doesn't work out. There are occasionally PVP events where participants get their stats temporarily equalized so that the outcome boils down to skill. I haven't seen one in a while.DIVETX wrote:5 - Dueling... is there a community for it or is it a feature set not many use here?
Primary communication is world chat in game. It can also be accessed from http://portal.uoex.net/DIVETX wrote:6 - Is this the primary form of communication? Does the shard leverage Discord or IRC?
Start your account when you have time to really dive in. You have something like 30 days as a young player during which you have access to useful resources that older players can't get to. Worst thing you can do to yourself is look around for 15 minutes and then come back next month.DIVETX wrote:7 - Any other things I should be thinking about?

If you're looking for a friendly active guild that is accepting of newbies I'd recommend using [pm and talking to Loveshines in the HLP guild. My name is Lanthanum in game and I've been in the guild for a few weeks but we're a friendly bunch and helpful too I think (well it IS in the name!).
