Coronavirus

Post by +Colibri »

In light of how the events all around the world are unfolding, I just wanted to express my hopes that we all - the whole world - will take the necessary steps to deal with this, and that things will return to normal quickly.

For the shard, there's nothing to worry about. We're completely cyber so things are pretty much the usual.

As some of you know, I'm from Slovenia - a small country in central/southern Europe, we are actually just a few hours drive from northern Italy, the most critical areas in Europe. My country is currently #11 in the cases-per-million inhabitants, which is about 10x that of the USA. Schools will be closed as of Monday for 2 weeks, but everyday activity has already slowed down yesterday.

Since I'm not in the medical field there's no point in repeating the various info about health precautions like how to properly wash hands. However from a mathematical perspective, it looks as if the infections double every 2-3 days. Something we can definitely do is take advice from health professionals, epidemiologists, etc... besides proper hygiene, also to reduce the physical contact. That will give the health system the ability to threat those who need help getting through the disease.

If something we MMO gamers are good at, is being in isolation

I live in Seattle, center of the U.S. outbreak. I've been glued to the news and... what you just posted +C is by far the most intelligent thing I've read so far.

Yeah, at this point it's about flatten the curve.

But I live in Seattle. Where people have responded reasonably to the crisis.

Hey +C I hope you and all your beloved ones are safe!

We here in Portugal are already closing everything. I've been sent to work home since Wednesday. Despite the easy gaming isolation I find it quite harsh not to be able to go anywhere.

Despite this restraints when kids were kicked off schools to go home this is what happened:

I think this is worst than the toilet paper crisis :lool:

Hello from Italy, the center of the world!!!! coff..cooff..ehm...of the CoronaViruse's spread.

We have already closed quite ALL, tomorrow will be the 8th day that my wife is at home without exit.
My children stays at home from 15 days by now, every kind of school is closed.

It's not only a problem of dirty hands, the viruses spread easily through the air, so if you stay near a person with the Coronavirus his breath will spread the viruses around, so you will easy will got the virus.

For such reason, the italian's premier, decided to close quite EVERYTHING ( schools, offices, firms, shops, citycenter, park, museums... ) and let decided to the private firm if to continue to operate or not.
Also he warmly suggested to EVERYONE to stay at home, to exit only to buy foods, and for a very little time.

Next week we will know if this operation helped us, for the moment all of us count the ppl that have the disease and are in hospital.

Some country as America and U.K. decided to don't take care about this virus, it's a very stupid moves, who will pay more will be the old people and the ill's one.
If you can, try to be at home, to don't exit, to have no contact with no one, till the time that the virus will disappear.

Also...buy medical mask FPP3's one, and liquid for clean hands, it will value "gold" when the virus will spread in your country.
Please don't understimate the danger. People die easy, old and young, so try to take care.

Interesting to hear about what is happening in other countries from their residents rather than the news outlets.

I'm in the UK and our government started off with a naive and foolish plan that was critisized by many in the scientific community and the public. As of yesterday, they have now made a U-turn on that policy and are putting more serious measures in place, but they should have done this earlier to limit the spread in its initial stages.

We're told now to avoid any social interaction that is unecessary or not essential and to avoid pubs, restaurants, bars and clubs. The schools remain open for now, but I can see them closing next week. Everyone who is able to has been recommended to work from home, so today will be my last day travelling to the office in London.

You can't buy hand sanitiser or face masks anywhere, it has been that way for weeks now. People are panic buying and stockpiling many things, but we're trying to avoid this as it is unfair on those who are vunerable and not able to stockpile.

Be safe out there everyone and remember to wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face, particularly where the mucosal membranes are, i.e. lips/mouth, nose, eyes and ears.

Yes the situation is similar in Australia. It is a shame that those who govern us have not paid more attention to what scientists and researchers have had to say and continue to say about threats to public health and welfare.
I have friends and relatives living in the USA, New York and Boston, others in London and one in Norway. They are reporting the same dilemmas of systems not prepared and not responding quickly and appropriately, of lack of essential monitoring and testing processes. Health systems either overwhelmed already or about to be.
There are the usual scammers and hustlers trying to take advantage.
So use soap for 20secs, look after your family, friends and neighbors, eat your vegetables! and enjoy playing UO.
That's a hint +C and +K, some simple fun events would be good if you can find the time.

A few updates:

• Someone I know has tested positive. He's an old acquaintance, fortunately he's feeling fine and is at home in self-isolation for 2 weeks and says he will try to stay even longer than that. He's been to Italy on a business trip, it's likely he got it there. So it's really a different thing from seeing this only on the news - to actually know someone who has it. After coming back he was at the office for a day, and fortunately none of his employees he has met with on that day are showing symptoms. All the employees he has met with, were standing at the door of his office, as a precaution.

• Our country currently has suspended public transport, no schools, no mass gatherings, non-essential stores/pubs/salons are closed by decree. Grocery stores are open, so are gas stations, pharmacies, and such vital things. I assume that they will make a full quarantine by the end of the week, where the only reason you're allowed to go outside is for essential food shopping, or medical emergencies.

• It seems that certain over the counter drugs have shown to be more likely to cause complications with the disease. This could be related to high death rates in Iran and Italy. Let's hope more will be known & scientifically proven soon, since this new information could save a lot of lives.

• On a lighter note: If you are stocking up, don't forget snacks, sweets and drinks. Being at home for a couple of weeks with just pasta and toilet paper will be boring :) We are out of nutella and anything else chocolatey.
It's been over a week since my last grocery store visit, but we're still well stocked up on essentials. I'm going again tomorrow to buy some stuff, for ourselves and for neighbours & relatives, so they don't have to go, since they are older and therefor more at risk. (overall trying to really reduce the number of times I have to go, and how long i spend inside the store - it's very unlikely that I'll get it like that, but it's good to take extra caution in these times).

There really is no reason to panic about it. There is just need to take extra care.

Some say it's like the flu.
Well, for an individual - the symptoms and going through the disease for most people really is like that. Some even like a mild cold, or just a runny nose with some cough.
But looking a the big picture, in terms of how the health system will cope with it, it's a completely different story.

So stay home if you can, avoid crowded places, avoid non-essential errands, do your shopping quickly. We need to flatten the curve!
