Deco team looking for members

Post by +Colibri »

We are forming the first group that focuses on a specific aspect of the shard - the team of decorators.
(Soon, other teams will be formed, for example moderators, wiki scribes, dungeon makers, event hosts...)

The decorators group will initially have the ability to create addons, to be sold at auctions or the deco room, even temporary 1-week vendor stones related to a holiday or current event. Later, as soon as everything else is set in place, also to decorate places in the shard like around towns, decorate dungeons (working together with dungeon designers to make "functional" dungeon also look pretty and with attention to detail, whether it's supposed to look all bloody or a forest in bloom).

Applications are open for players who have either tinkered with the visual/decorative/aesthetic aspects of the game, or have already created a nice collection of interesting and visually appealing things.

To apply, just post a reply in this thread with screenshots of your work you're most proud of (5 images maximum, you can also post instructions on how to get to your house if it's something you'd like to include). This can be either a house design (floors/walls), yard wand, combination of deco that you've put together in your house, ... or things built with GM commands (or Pandora's Box, UO Architect, etc...), either on another shard or your own test shard.

We currently have 5 decorators, and we're looking to accept one new member in February and another in March. As it goes for all teams, I'm aiming that they will contain active members of the most suitable/talented people for that particular aspect. So membership isn't permanent, we'll likely rotate about 2 members per year (depending on the overall activity of the group, the shard, how much my schedule gets messed up, etc... In a while, it could be a quarterly rotation, or even more frequent).
Btw right now, the group of decorators is technically a "contextual commands beta testers group", which was supposed to go on for a few months when I launched the system and then turn it into the actual decorators group, but there was much of everything else so this got pushed back a bit.

This is a volunteer group. There are a few perks though:
- You get to be in a group of people with the same interest in deco, and you'll be able to pick up knowledge and tricks, about both the technical aspect of how to even build it, to more subtle things like what actually makes a good addon.
- You will make your mark on this shard, which has been running almost 19 years now, and will hopefully be around for another few decades. And as things get copied/imitated between shards, it's possible that your influence will be carried all over the UO community.
- For addons that you create: a free copy of the addon if it's sold at auction or vendorstone, a percentage of the sales (10% for auctions, others to be determined) your name in the addon's Preview screen.
- Title for your name to display your membership (and multiple titles for long-term active members, that reflect the rank), also I'm planning on a hand-held equipment like a scepter that shows your membership and the ranking (points achieved).
- Points that are given based on the evaluation of your creations, these points will be spendable in a special members-only vendorstone for completely unique, but only decorative things. It's still a work in progress, there will be a few unique decorative items, possibly one footsteps that are for members only, and we were just brainstorming about creating a few members-only hues (maybe a kind of gold color that shines a bit differently).

I will pick the winning candidates based on what they've created and come by for a chat. I'll also consider opinion from different sources, because I'm mostly a programmer and not such a great decorator. So feel free to comment on what you see in this thread.

I would like to apply to the decoration team.

I say this very assertively, because I know that it is something that I would do with a lot of will and love for our community. I have been playing daily for 5 years and I believe that I know a little about popular tastes and what is and isn't circulating in the market anymore.

In fact, I would put aside all my current activities to dedicate myself to creating beautiful and fantastic themed pieces for the shard. I also feel that I could contribute to decoration and design solutions in general, whenever necessary.

I don't seek rewards for this, just the pleasure of working creatively for the good of the community. I have experience in decorating backyards, outdoor areas and indoor areas (there is a difference in the dimensions of what fits well in each context). My creations would tend to be realistic and usually with a narrative behind them. I like to focus on what is detailed and surprising. I would like to create addons that would reflect the culture of Excelsior and generally be pleasing to the senses. I don't like gore and violence themes. I like to explore three-dimensionality, intersection and simplicity with elegance.

Unfortunately, I don't have many images to show at the moment, because my way of playing is a bit detached. I often undo things I've been working on, after they're finished.

My last creation that I consider satisfactory was the "Chill Garden" that I built and made available in the world teleporter a few weeks ago, I didn't take any images of it, again I'm sorry about that. But I can say that I received a lot of positive feedback from fellow players, I think they could attest to this information.

Thank you.

Yours,
Deckard
(or Lisan, or Kairóz)

PS: I accidentaly posted this logged in a different account that i never use, different username, i'm sorry.

the dungeon decorator one certainly sounds something i would be interested in
i tend to have a bit of a less is more approach to decorating
there are alot of dungeon maps (in ilshenar) that are currently unaccessible

i have no idea how much play room the dungeon decorator would get but if we are able to propose monster spawns as well i already have some great ideas with some of the unused dungeons

I am unfortunately, not much of an artist, I know others are far better than I am. But I thought this would be a fun opportunity to try something out. This is a technical demonstration using my UOFiddler knowledge of Excelsior's game assets combined with my knowledge of Orion to create a deco item using just a gump.

I also animated it and posted to youtube with a theme appropriate tune.
The Void
You have entered the void, you must either pay tribute or die.

Hope it inspires some of you more creative sorts :).

I'd be interested. I have a certain style which is pretty much gardens, ponds, fountains, etc. I'm not sure how big of a variety of addons I could produce but if it's a rotating spot, I think I could contribute some addons people would want. Best example of my work is my house that has been taking over the area west of Zento.

Edit 1: Changed the bird's eye view of the Water Gardens to an attachment so you can open it up in a new tab to zoom in.
Edit 2: Added deco contest submission as another example of work.

Glad to see your applications, I think I counted 6.

This topic is now moved from the "Announcements" into a dedicated Deco Team subforum, and it's possible to attach images as well.

"A mysterious orb has awakened from the depths of Sosaria. It seems to possess an unknown power to magnetize water from the ground. The incessant flow has created a large wetland that gushes into the headwaters of the Spiritwood River.

There are tales among the elvish people, that in the beggining, the rivers started to flow each one from a single pearl, sowed across the land from the heavens by Varda Elentári, the Queen of the Stars. They called them "Riverspearl".

In the tongue of the folk men, they are known as "Heart of the River", but no one has ever seen one before. Their existence inhabit mostly in the imaginary of fishermen and children.

After all, the legends seems to be true... But, what power made it emerge like this? Is this the will of the Valar, or some kind of powerful sorcery created by a more earthly being?" (Deckard)

I've been working on this large lounge/chilling area for the past week, it has lots of seating and I hope it's a nice place to hang out, take a break and relax a bit. Everyone is welcome. You can access it through the World Teleporter in the ‘Shops’ menu.

I won't be able to keep it open for long and I'll probably have to take it apart in a few days. I hope you enjoy the visit, and please let me know your feedbacks? Thank you

I build this area to be submitted to the DRG Deco Contest (happily, it got 1st place!). It illustrates one of my favourite scenes of Star Wars, the duel between a jedi master and his apprentice who has recently turned to the dark side of the force.

"—This is the end for you, my Master!
— It's over, Anakin. I have the high ground!
—You underestimate my power!
— Don't try it!"
(Anakin jumps)
