Computer help needed

Anyone know What causes a computer to lock up to the point where you cant even open up the CD Drive??
How about when the computer is booting up, can you press the button on the unit and the tray comes out?
If so, then you probably have a software error... i've seen my computer lock up the CDROM in the past.
If the tray still doesn't come out, then there could be a hardware malfunction... check if the light on the CDROM ever blinks (for example when you power up the computer)... if it doesn't then maybe a wire has a bad connection and the cdrom doesn't have any power.
Anyway if the CDROM is older than 3 years an easy fix is to simply buy a new one, a full cd-dvd-writer is approx 30eur now. You can take it to a professional to look at but i dont know how much that will cost you.
Or you can do the things in the first paragraph and let us know what you found out.
