Help with training animals

Ok today I tried to level up my first pet which was a nightmare. As it was leveling it was only gaining 1-6 ability points every time. I tamed a few more nightmares and some kirins and they were all doing the same thing. I'm wondering if there are any tricks to making them gain more ability points or if I'm doing something wrong while training them. To make them level i just go hunting with them.

you can train them in the training room under custom just makes sure you don't do it afk.

how do i do that? everytime i make them attack the Npc they don't gain any exp points

i think the only training they get in the training room is stats such as magery/wrestling.. etc.. levels i think have to be done in the world area

ok i had a level of 8 abilities points. it was awesome. lol still nowhere near 60 yet

I think it is totally random...I have elveled pets 42 levels and had under 100 points to spend...then i have leveled the same type of pet 42 levels and had over 200 points to spend.
