I don't remember if you can just cast Magic Lock on a box and then unlock it with picks or not... but what I ended up doing was making some extra characters with different levels of tinkering skill and enough carpentry to make a box.

Base 50 Skill
Base 20 skill + 60 skill ball = 80 Tinkering
Base 40 Skill + 60 skill ball = 100 tinkering

That gives you some boxes of varying difficulty you can lock with the included key, then pick the lock.

Eventually that will stop giving gains, but you can pick the Blaze chests in various places (Ice dungeon's a good spot) to get ice practice locks. You can also buy these relatively cheaply on vendors usually. Then you just use different levels of lockpicks to try picking it.

Higher level material lockpicks increase your chances. I don't remember exact things, but I think I worked my way up the materials until it didn't give me the "no chance to pick this lock" message, then used that to macro (or a level higher). Then as I gained skill, I'd use lower-quality picks to reset the sweet spot.

*Might* be able to put off using ice practice locks by having a tinker with 120 skill make a box. not sure.

When I began lockpicking, I picked the crates and trunks at Vesper Bank.

Many moons ago I wrote the lock picking section of the skill guide.

I believe that the info is still accurate as to how success chance and skill gain are calculated.
