Basic shard info

Post by Rylin »

Hello fellow players

I have played UO a few time before on some of our local shards ( RSA ) but decided this time to venture outside our borders. Please can a few basic questions be answered for me

1) Does this shard have a classing system?
2) Are there certain skills which are key to survival here?
3) How do most people hunt ( in parties, with tanks, with mages and tanks or powerplayer types? )
4) What is the hardest skill to raise

Thanks

Heya, while I havent been here long this is what I've observed:

1) Our ability to have all skills removes the need for any particular class.
2) Spirit Speak at GM or above for the Cleric spells.
3) Being a largely Tamer shard most hunt solo with pets, though there are some who are geared to the point where pets are annoying and solo everything with melee/bow.
4) Hardest skill would probably be Lockpicking. Fishing is slow and I havent tried Cartography but everything else seems easy.

i feel taming is also very hard to raise quickly as is vet skills because of the timing delay and being required to have a pet fighting constantly to be able to bandage him.

1) Does this shard have a classing system?

What Kaleel said...

You can have 120 in most skills and 130 in non-magic combat related skills with the use of skill essences. You can go over the typical 120 level with specific items, such as crafting armor and hammers. There is no spellweaving here.

2) Are there certain skills which are key to survival here?

I will again piggyback off what Kaleel said, but also state that there are a few others are important. If you want to come out swinging, I'd suggest working up Animal Taming, Animal Lore, and Archery. Reason being you can get your hands on some "scrap pets" from the vets here for fairly cheap (or free). You can then use them as the meat shield between your bow-shooting self and the loot carrying targets =). The Spirit Speak for cleric spells that Kaleel proposed is key since it has a quick and powerful ranged healing spell. Animal Lore can also open the door to druid spells, if you want to get your hands on a Tome of Nature (200 ED a.k.a. 20 USD donation)....just don't become a permanent Enchanted Grove -> Volcanic Eruption -> Looper... =)

3) How do most people hunt ( in parties, with tanks, with mages and tanks or powerplayer types? )

Kaleel is right. The majority of people are a mixture of pet-ranged and pet-melee. I don't know of a single person who uses magic schools as a means of primary attack.

4) What is the hardest skill to raise

And again, Kaleel is right with the Lockpicking skill being the hardest to raise. Fishing wasn't really a problem for me, but it does take some time. Provocation can be tricky too.
May I suggest considering this:
You can tackle the Lockpicking skill much much easier (if you care) by raising your taming skill manually via the use of the pet brushes we have here. Rather than taming bulls for the next 4 months, you can just craft pet dyes and such to raise your skill at a reasonably high rate. You can buy the materials for this task cheaply. However, doing this is really only for those who want to eventually have everything maxed for bragging rights. From my experience (limited) and from what I hear from others, picking chests for loot isn’t exactly the best way to get money and loot fast.
Anyone, feel free to chime in…

Let me add 2 things which I think are valuable to a new player starting out to venture in this sometimes unforgiving land.
1. Learn Stealth. You need the ability to get back to your corpse unseen before it goes poof or before you litter the floor with so many that you don't recall which one was the first.
2. Get your healing skill up. Not only is it a way to heal without magery, but it can also cure you from most poisons.

One last note, do not hesitate to use the camping skill for stat gain. It is one of the few that will raise all 3 equally. get yourself some kindling and every 15 minutes make campfires. Start at 0.0 so you won't use as much kindling in the beginning.

You can gain relatively quickly in both but it depends on your ability to make gold. As a new player this is simple by doing the rat quest for a couple of hours and selling the organics either direct to [exex or other players. Once you have a nice stack of gold you can afford to get the bandages/regs/brushes/jewelery and guild stone if need be.

Get your taming up to 60 either by training normally or buying items to stack it up, and using brushes follow http://www.uoex.net/wiki/Taming_Skill_Guide for Taming. For Vet either join a guild or buy yourself a guildstone and get a pet that can handle a punch, all guard and start attacking your pet (unarmed) while bandaging it, the gains are reasonably quick. You can set up a macro for fighting your own pet, just watch it run for a bit before going afk.

Healing isnt really needed especially in the beginning as the cleric spells can remove poison, has a pretty hefty heal and a decent heal over time. Bandage heals are too slow in the early stages, you need a lot of Dex before the skill becomes decent.
