Hello Excelsior. I'm a UO old timer. I started playing it when it launched and it still holds a pretty special place in my heart.
Now I'm a working man and a dad to boot, and I'm keen to introduce my son to the UO experience. However the brutal PK experience I remember is not all that much fun when playtime is limited and hard-won gear is lost so easily. And I don't think my six year old would enjoy himself very much, getting murdered again and again in Brit graveyard!
So I'm really happy that I have found a shard with a completely anti-pk stance. And from my reading it looks like a fun shard too! Hopefully my boy and I will get on for some adventure this weekend. We play from NZ, so we are used to not seeing crowds during our play-time. But if you do see Justin Kace and his faithful sidekick pottering around, feel free to say gidday!

Not off to a flying start unfortunately! When I run the shortcut that the Excelsior installation made UO starts and then within seconds displays a blank dialogue box titled "fatal:". When I 'OK' out of that I get the standard old windows message 'blah blah client has stopped working.'
Hunting for a solution now but if anyone stumbles across this and can throw me a tip, that would be fab!

Herp-a-derp! Run as administrator!
This page
http://www.uoex.net/startup might want to mention that, unless it's really not necessary and is just my computer!

Welcome to UOEX! I think you'll like it here, we're a very family friendly shard and we have lots of players from all over the world, so you're likely to see people out and about at all hours. Make sure to check out our wiki, it has lots of helpful information about getting started on the shard and will help you find all of our newbie resources.

I also got tired of getting pked every 5 minutes on another shard I was playing on for about a year. It sounded cool in theory, however it quickly got old.
In searching for a new shard, it seemed like all the top ones only had a PVP facet. I personally prefer the renaissance era, but any shard that runs it is only PVP all the time, getting ganked all day and not being able to even step in a dungeon led me to this shard.
It's been a great experience here so far! Really helpful and friendly player base.

Thank you for the welcomes!
I did get on for a little play last night but it was passed my lad's bedtime so he went without. I got set up with the basics and beat on some rats as per the newbie quest.
Tonight I have my board game night! Dominion is brilliant. If you like board games and haven't played it, do it!
But once that is over, I have a plan to set my lad's account up and boost him up a little so he doesn't have to do the fiddly process of getting trained by NPCs and the boring bit of standing at a training dummy for hours. I can see him dropping a whole stack of gold on a trainer by accident and that would not be good!
But I have read the rules (I'm a good boy mostly!) and see using someone else's account is super naughty. To explain the situation fully so I can know for sure if I am not allowed to do what I am planning...
I will not be logged on to Excelsior from my computer.
I will not be logged in to my account at all.
I will be logged in on my boy's new account from the laptop that he will be playing from in future.
I will only be setting up his UI, some macros, and NPC training the skills he has told me he wants to use. I will train him up to ~30 at the NPCs and then get him to about 50 combat skills at the target dummies.
After the above, I will never use his account again.
So I would be breaking the letter of the law. I know I could do this without anyone being any the wiser. It would be on a different computer, different IP, for all intents and purposes it's my son playing. Except in this case it isn't, and I am all about full disclosure.
It will be a pita, but if I have to, I will do this all with him while he is playing.
Could I please get a verdict from an authorised enforcer of the rules? There will be no discussion, argument, or ill-will. Just let me know please.

Hi, in most cases +C (the owner) allows parents to assist in setting up the account for a young child. You can go ahead and do that, but once he's set you two shouldn't touch each others accounts. That will prevent either of you from falling awry of the multi-accounting rule. Hope that makes sense

Yep cool thanks Nyx. That's awesome and I appreciate the flexibility. I'll make sure he knows not to log in to his account on my computer too.
Is there anything I should do to make sure I don't step on any toes? Like page a GM in game when I start the setup?

Just a few tips to make your play fun... [c this command will be your best friend! Any time you want to talk in general chat, whether it is to ask a quest, ask for help, or even just to have a friendly chat, just put [c in front of whatever you want to say! Never fear asking about something in chat. And as +Nyx said, there are people on all the time.
Make sure to do the newbie quest where you kill rats. You can do it every hour (I believe this info is right... someone want to clarify?

) Those organics you get from it are a players first way of making real decent gold. You can either use the command [exex to sell on the Exex (Excelsior Exchange) or post in general chat. Sometimes players pay about twice the amount if you post in general!
Until your weapon skills are at 75, beat on the trainers in the training room, stopping only to go do the rat quest. You can also fight the trainers while unattended. So if you want to get skills in more than one weapon, set up an overnight macro (Just put yourself in war mode and hit trainer. You'll go all night as long as no one comes and "peaces" but I've never heard of anyone doing that just for spite... in fact it may be disabled in there I'm not sure.
Once again, if you need any assistance or have any questions, always feel free to ask. I've never met an overall friendlier shard in all my years of playing. Welcome!!!

just fyi once u hit a certain skill lvl (1000 total i think) you lose your young status. once your account hits certain age (40 hours i think) you lose young status. keep doing the rat quest as much as possible for the organics (can be fun if your boy can be in there with you as you can say hey go get that one he is gettin away lol ). however either way the training room can only take your skills up to 75... once your young status is gone if you want pm me and ill let you use my personal trainer at my house which can take your skill all the way to your cap whether its 100 or 120. also any time your character is on a trainer be sure to take all armor off an use the green daggers from the training room as even though you cant be hurt the trainer will destroy your gear. if any of this you already know then sorry for the repeats.
a few of us are always hangin out in teamspeak also so if need help with a mob or rez, or have a question about the game , much easier to talk then to type

again from all of us welcome to excelsior to both of you

Also being an old time UO player, it's been a bit of a challenge to get into this newer stuff. So much has changed. Gone are the old weapons such as Supremely accurate, indestructible silver Katina of Vanquishing. Crafted weapons can be much better than the ones I'm looting off Liches. Tarathan Warriors don't appear to have magic weapon loot, some of the dungeon spawn is a bit different. From what I've read, magery isn't as important here. Resisting Spells doesn't gain from getting zapped from monsters.
There is a lot to learn.
At first I was a bit miffed at changes (no longer being able to rely on my memories to be an expert), but then I remember logging into UO back in the day and not knowing what to do. (getting bored)
I think that if I can forget "how things were" and just go on as if it was a new game, it will be really fun. This server has a great community and lots of fun things going for it. The new player support system is great!

Mmm thanks guys. My newbie status has well and truly faded. In terms of game mechanics, not the reality of the situation!!
But it's all good. I have found a few moneymakers and I am not in a hurry, happy to potter. I already have a 13x17 3 story so it has as much storage as I can afford for the near future. I prefer mostly training my combat skills during active play so no need for a training dummy. I've just been running around exploring, provoking monsters onto each other, checking out vendors, and making a little money. Almost charged right into the middle of Fel Yew before I realised things weren't quite right!!
My current goal is taming but it's a slow grind even to 60 for someone who doesn't get to play very much! I have a mule, you see, but he is quite the disobedient beast at the moment!!
