[Current] Hues.mul - File + Installation Instructions

Post by +Rayne »

New Hues available!

If you would like to be able to see and/or use the new hues, please follow the following instructions:

1. LOG OUT OF ULTIMA AND CLOSE YOUR CLIENT.

2. Go to the directory where your Ultima Online is installed. Most people install there Ultima Online either of the folders listed:

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Ultima Online ...
- or -
C:\Program Files\Ultima Online - Excelsior Freeshard
- or -
D:\Games\Ultima Online - Excelsior Freeshard
- or -
A custom directory, in which case you should know the path where you have installed it.

3. Look for the file called "Hues.mul". You can think of it as, your library of colors for Excelsior.

NOTE: some people do not have file extensions set to visible. In this case the file would just shows as "Hues."

Example:

Image

4.
If you have your file extensions visible, rename the file into "hues-old.mul".

If you do not have your file extensions visible, rename the file to "hues-old"

>>>>VISTA USERS SKIP TO STEP 8.<<<<

5. Choose to download the attachment here. This is a ZIP archive file. It contains the hues.mul file that you need

Note: Simply putting this hues3c1.zip to your Ultima Online directory will not work. You must either:

Either open the ZIP Archive and drag-drop the hues.mul file into your Ultima Online folder.
- or -
Download the ZIP file, then extract it to your desktop, then move the extracted hues.mul file to your Ultima online folder.

6. Start your client and log into Excelsior!

The new Hue numbers are:

2173 through 2200
2225 through 2277

7. Important note:

This file (hues 3c1) is of a newer version than the hues file that you get by downloading the 600mb pre-patched client.
There is no need to re-download the entire pre-patched client for this, nothing will change by doing so.

(This last paragraph is based on the assumption that pre-patched client 3c is still the latest version. Once a newer release of the pre-patched client is released, the hues.mul file will be included in the update).

VISTA USERS:

Follow the original steps, 1 through 4.

8. Choose to download the attachment here. This is a ZIP archive file. It contains the hues.mul file that you need

9. Choose to Save the file.

10. Once it has been downloaded, go to the folder in which this newly downloaded hues3c1.zip is located. (The typical folder is your Downloads folder.)

11. Do NOT double click the hues3c1.zip file, but simply Right Click it. (You would not suspect that this would make a difference, but it does. Thank you, Vista)

12. Choose "Extract Files" from the Right Click Menu.

13. You can choose the file path from this point and place the file in your UO directory, or you can extract it to your desktop first, and then drag and drop it in your UO directory. This is personal preference.

14. Start your client and log into Excelsior!

The new Hue numbers are:

2173 through 2200
2225 through 2277

NOTE: I have tested this on a VISTA machine, with WINRAR installed.

The initial post has been edited.

There seem to have been a problem with how IE stores a .mul file, therefor i've put it in a ZIP archive so that it won't be damaged during transport.

And to repeat the above note:
Right now the pre-patched client is at version 3c, and this hues file is version 3c1. Which means that this hue file that you can download individually, is newer than the one in the 600mb bundle.
Once the pre-patched client is available in a newer version (probably 3d or 4a), the new hues will be included.

Sorry to have deleted the player posts, but they have been a bit confusing. I don't like to delete user posts but I've been dealing with this hue problem for the better part of the day.

If you still have problems, and have exhausted all known solutions, don't hesitate to reply to this thread and we'll try to help.

EDIT:
The "old" hues file, the one that comes bundled with the prepatched client ver. 3c, is available at:

I have updated the instructions with a specific guide for Vista users.

Beginning to think it may just be easier to upload the file as Hues.UOEX and make people change the extension back.

WOW this is confusing. I still can't get it to work. I follow the instructions exactly (and believe me, I understand how this stuff works as well so it's no big deal anyway), and when I click to download the file is 478kb. When it gets finished downloading and I go to the folder to right click on it, the file shows up as like 100-some kb or 200-some kb but never the full amount. I tried saving it with a different extension and that didn't work either. Any other ideas?

Maybe make a .rar file?

Attached to this post is a .rar version of the Hues.mul. You are welcome to try it, following the same instructions.

My experiment was tried with both IE and Firefox from a Vista system, and it worked in both instances. I am not quite sure why you are having trouble. I have attached a .rar version of the download in the previous post.

I have Windows Vista and nothing was working for me even though I followed the directions to the letter. I finally found the way to make the hues work. Instead of going to Program Files->Ultima Online, I went to C: -> Windows -> System 32 -> Ultima Online Excelsior Shard and moved the new hues.mul file there and Voila! It worked. I don't know if any other Vista users were having the same trouble as me, but if so try this.

It just depends on where you have your client installed. There's the folder that contains all the files required to run the game, including client.exe, map data, animations, graphics... and hues.mul is one of those files. If you had initially installed the game into C:/windows/system32 then there's where it is :)
