Did you know....

Post by Cygnus »

I have come across some interesting things while playing UO and thought, I wonder if everyone knows about this? Then I thought, I wonder what else is out there that I don't know of? This gave me an idea to see if we can get a new thread started where players can add things that they find interesting that may or may not be known, or if they know of little known tricks or tips that may help other players and would like to share them. I came up with a small list but I will put 2 here to see how this goes.

For example:
Did you know that the camping skill is one of the few skills that will raise all three stats and you can train it anywhere as long as you have enough kndling. It is best to start at 0.0 skill.

Did you know that if you stand among a bunch of orcs (perferably hiding) that you'll hear one of them constantly repeat the phrase "Go visit the moon." If he is not saying that, then I am an orc! By the way, if you are not hiding, then there is a good chance you are either killing them or being killed by them and they usually make different noises when fighting.

I have about 10 more but will save them to see how this goes. Alright guys, amaze the rest of us with some neat to know stuff! :woot:

Once in a while a Lizardman will say what seems like "Superstar." Reminds me of that cheesy SNL-like movie.

Here are a couple more.

Did you know that if you constantly click on a cow, it will briefly tip over?

For you beekeepers;
Did you know that you can also buy empty bottles from Provisioners and Herbalists?

I like this subject ^_^. Did you know...

Giving beggars gold will sometimes get you a random reward.

Lord British (the character, not Richard Garriot) was actually born in the United Kingdom.

Every once in a blue moon an energy vortex will spawn as a purple llama with the stats of an energy vortex (not sure if this is still true or not, but pretty funny back when OSI had it ^_^).

Cygnus, I did not know you were a habitual cow-tipper!

For empty bottles, you can use a Corkscrew (tinker-made) on junk lower level potions from loot. Instant empty bottle! You can also craft them with sand, but I don't recommend that because one sand=one bottle. And it takes quite a while to gather sand.

Just came across this while hunting with my brother and had to bring it up.

Did you know that the Betrayer drops the only piece of game written literature at Excelsior? (the book is "A Welcome" by Lord Blackthorne)

I for one did not, which would have saved me 30 minutes of transcribing from the internet ><.

Did you know you can mine the smooth little rocky bumps you find in towns and forests? I have several platinum spots from there. Two are located in Bucs Den.

Did you know that with certain tamable critters like Fire Steeds, Nightmares, etc... you can have them "drop" items before you add them to your bod deed. You are losing money if you don't. And you are really losing out if you don't ask the mule to drop after taming it.

Cygnus my friend, I'm going to disagree with you on one point. Don't kill me! LOL

I tamed Fire Steeds (thanks for your help), and did not make them drop before putting them on BOD. I shrank them with leash because I wanted to keep the lvl 30s. :D Anyway, I brought out the ones I didn't want before putting them on the BOD (in my house) and made them drop.

They dropped. :D

Another "did you know" -

Did you know that on the portal.uoex.net website you can reclaim your Private Messages? Ever miss a PM because you were running a fill keg script, and the PM disappeared? Well never fear you can find it again on the Portal website, under tab of Messages. It seems PMs are saved for 5 days.

Keep in mind though, that if private messages can be found this way, that no PMs are "private." So be careful what you discuss on game or the website that you don't want anyone else to know. Take it off-site to email or a non-game related messaging program.

No offense taken. Thanks for the correction and I am glad you could get the gold.

Another did you know...

Did you know that if you cast magic reflection and protection on yourself you can raise each resist up 5 more points? It should stay that way until you cast one of those spells again or you die I do believe. Of course, it will not raise you over 70.

I was surprised to learn several Second Age players (like myself) didn't know this one.

Just to clear up a comment that confused me:
you can have them "drop" items before you add them to your bod deed
Anyway, I brought out the ones I didn't want before putting them on the BOD (in my house) and made them drop.
Where was the disagreement? However, I do feel that the confusion may be that if you put items into a pack animal and try to shrink it, you'll generally get a message that the backpack needs to be cleared out. The mentioned animals (except the mule) are not pack animals. The items they drop are the ones you'd find in the corpse when they're killed, minus any random death items. If you're using the animal for fighting, rather than bodding, you have one last chance to collect the money which is at the first time it dies. The items will not appear at any other death, if the animal is bonded.

It's probably confusing because Cygnus and I had a discussion in game, before he made the post.

He had told me that if I shrink the animal before telling it to drop, it would not drop the next time it was brought out for putting on BODs.

Just to clarify, what I have found is that right after taming Fire Steeds, Nightmares, White Wyrms and Mules, if you ask them to drop prior to shrinking they will drop items. In the case of Fires Steeds, they drop gold, a large amount of sulfurous ash and a good amount of rubies; Nightmares drop gold and a small amount of sulfurous ash; White Wyrms drop gold. I am sure there are others that drop but I am not a big time tamer so I can't say for sure. I falsely assumed that after shrinking they would no longer drop as I had gone to my stash of shrunken pets that I acquired from old house drops that I keep in my training room and none of those creatures would drop anything. Ceara proved my assumption wrong by unshrinking a steed she just tamed and shrunk and had them drop their bounty.

I think the problem was that, as you said, the pets came from a house drop. The chances are that they were fighting pets which had died in the past. They drop everything at the first death and will no longer be carrying anything. Not every pet carries anything and some carry such a small amount that forgetting to tell them to drop won't break you. Some of those pets are pretty rich though! (Well, to my feeble bank account, anyway!)

I just tell any fresh tame to drop anyway, just in case. Keep in mind, a peaced animal won't drop unless its the last command before the peace runs out. So don't assume those aggro-types are broke just because they don't drop right off. Also, you can't skin a bonded pet, although you can skin a non-bonded pet.
