Looking for a new home.. (long time UO'er)

Post by Southern »

Howdy, as we say here in South Texas!

I am a loooooong time UO'er (Sept 97, to be precise) who has played on OSI servers until 2007, then moved over and was active on a RunUO shard (which I won't name! :) ) ever since. That shard, however, just isn't "Busy" enough for me, usually only has between 20-30 people logged on at any specific time, and half of THOSE aren't really active.. So I'm looking for a new place to play that's a more active. :) I don't need a lot of hand-holding, and I'm up on all UO features/functions up through Samurai Empire. (Of course, I know nothing about Excelcior specific modifications!)

About me: I am primarily a fisherman/merchant. I do not PvP (at all), and very seldom do I PvM, except in the case of needing something to stock a vendor (such as with bags/powders of Translocation). However, I *do* love to fish, mine, lumberjack, and I love running vendors. I've found, though, that there are so few new players coming into the lands of Britannia, that most people have their own mules and can craft just about anything that I would primarily sell on vendors - full spellbooks, pre-made runbook (with runes to towns, dungeons, etc), Scrolls, Potions, etc.. I feel that this style of play may be "dead" to me, but would appreciate any input that people here have on how the vendor situation is.

Above everything though (as mentioned above), I love to fish. Fish, fish, fish, and more fish. I'll fish from the time I wake up in the morning until I fall asleep face-first into the keyboard. :) So I have to ask the experienced fishermen & women here - how's the fishing situation, especially in terms of MIBs, Paragon Serpents (Felucca only?), etc.. Or in other words, does the fishing here differ much from OSI?

Also, since I've read here that this shards Felucca facet still follows the Trammel rule-set, are there any places that double resource collection? I.E., 2 ore for mining in Felucca as opposed to 1 ore in Trammel, or 20 logs as opposed to 10? Considering that Felucca is a "no Recall" shard here, that would make resource collecting very different/difficult, although I suppose that's what the "keyrings" are for. :)

I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed that Heartwood doesn't appear to be implemented here, as another thing I *love* to do is sit for hours with a few packies and do the heartwood quests for a chance at Runics & Special Recipies. Since I don't really like to PvM, killing Paragons isn't going to be a very good solution for me to replace those items (This is the first place I've seen with Fletching & Carpentry BODs, though, too!).. But I guess I can spend the extra time fishing. :-)

Like I said, I don't need a lot of handholding, and I like to read, so I'm going to spend a lot of time reading the forums for any answers I can gleem, and probably log in this weekend to get a proper look around.

Any information I can get from Merchants & Fishermen/women would be greatly appreciated, as that's going to drive my primary decision. :)

Many Thanks, and "Cheers!" :)

First off, welcome to the shard friend!

Felucca does run under the same rules as Trammel but, still double the resources, the only difference is no pk in fel and thougher mobs.

Has for runics, when using a garg axe or knife or pickaxe, there is a chance of droping runic tools from elementals that spawn.

Now for the vendor part, some crafted item and such are still profitable, like for instance, potion kegs (which are in high demand here due to the beehives). Crafted armor and weapons are'nt in demand tho. To get a good idea of what sells, check out the town center and exex. For exex type [exex

Fishing wise is great, you can get the best weapon in the game from it!

There are around 200 players online at peak hours, and always about 100 to 150 the rest of the time, with a very friendly and active (not to say addicted) base player.

Good luck

Thank you! I look forward to finding an active home where I spend hours and hours gathering resources that will do something other than rot in a chest in my house! :)

No PK is good. I'm hoping that Guard Zones still apply, however? I'd hate to be caught lumberjacking in Yew and be killed by a little old bogling that's winding his way through the woods.. :)

One thing I'm not keeping in mind, though, and that I'll have to get used to is that I can GM *every* skill on *every* character, if I so desire? I'm definitely not used to that, and it will probably change my gameplay significantly.. I'm so used to having true "Mule" characters (GM Tailoring/Carpentry/Blacksmithing/Tinkering/Fletching/Magery all on one character for instance) that I've never really had "Room" for fighting skills on the same character before. That will be.. Interesting, to say the least. :)

Speaking of which, what's skill gain like on Ex? I know that of course, GMing a skill gets harder and harder as you approach that magic 100.0 (or 110.0/120.0) number, but does skill gain slow down even more if you already have, say, 2,000 skill points on a character?

Ugh.. That's going to require some PvM, something I'm not too fond of. I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer! Oh.. Sorry, wrong show -- I'm a Blacksmith, not a Knight!

OK, so my Alchemist will get some use then.. Meaning so will my Carpenter & Lumberjack. Is there much of a market here for "Bulk" resources, or does that pretty much get gobbled up by this resource stone by the Brit Bank that I read about?

As I said, fishing is my passion, and generally where I'll spend 50% or more of my time.. So before I commit to Ex, I really would like to know about anything specific to fishing on Ex.. There's really nothing in the Wiki about it, nor anything on the forums.. For instance, does Ex spawn level 1-4 SOS chests when fished up? Do they contain all the normal stuff, reagents, scrolls, gold (1K - 4K), etc.? If it spawns the "best weapon in game", that pretty much tells me there are SOME Ex specific fishing rules.. I think I may even have read there are PowerScrolls for fishing here?

That's quite active, and sounds very much like what I'm looking for! As for (family) friendly, I would kind of expect that on a non-PK shard. Not a whole lotta trash-talking going on when you can't use profanity or kill people!

Many thanks Thorgal! Nice to meetcha. :)

And if anyone has any further input or comments on the above, please feel free to pipe in! Don't mind the fact that I'm a Yank come between us. :)

Yes they do!

Skill gain wont slow down, its realy fast actualy.

One way of going about it would be to buy yourself a good maxed pet and let it do all the killing!

If you check out the exex, ig type [exex you will notice all types of resources are for sale in there, all of which are being sold by players, so i would say yes. Oh and btw the stones dont have resources on them and they are located at trinsic bank, not BB.

For all fishing info i will let someone else answer all your questions, i dont fish myself, well not yet anyways, but i can tell you that we do have MIB's and sea serpents and the other sea creatures and of course fishing nets and ancient SOS.

Also a lot of the skills can be raised by hotkeys over night while your afk or at the training room for all melee skills, the only thing you cant do afk is gattering resources including fishing, and fighting mobs with a heal script.

If you have any questions that i might be able to answer, dont hesitate to pm me i.g. i will answer all that i can, im no expert like some having only been here 6 months but i will try and do my best.

Co-Existing Multiple Client Versions..

Post by Southern »

Another quick question - the "other" shard that I play requires a different version of UO than Excelsior does (7.x.x.x version) - Is there a way to install the Excelsior client that will not cause issues when playing one shard or the other?

Many thanks (again), and I'm still waiting on a fisherman to chime in. :)

As far as the client thing you just have to download it and install it if you havent already, i believe it will be a sep client that the other you might be playing...Not 100% sure on that so maybe someone else will answer it for ya.

As far as the SoS chests, yes they spawn just like in UO, has all the stuff that other did, regents, gold and so forth...As far as spawning the "best weapon in game" i couldnt tell you that and yeah there are powerscrolls for fishing.

Hope that helps some.
After everything i've been threw, i'm still smiling...Not because i'm strong...But because i'm crazy!
Now that should scare you.....

Thanks Mystery Man.. I'm glad to hear about fishing, as that's my passion. :-)

Going to have to find a way to get these 2 clients to co-exist somehow, though.

Hmm.. I bet I can just rename the folder when I want to switch from one shard to the other.. Or I might be able to use Razor to change the default data directory, as long as there's nothing in the registry (like pathnames) that would require UO to run correctly. I'm sure I'll figure something out. :)

Razor makes it pretty easy to use 2 clients. Set the UO Data Directory to point to your folder for EX, and set the server to shard.uoex.net, port 60.
When you want to play your other evil server. Change the UO data directory (should be a drop down if you have already set it up), and change the server and port (if necessary).

Hope that helps.

Thanks again, everyone. :) I'm downloading the torrent now, should be ready to pop in and take a look around in just a bit.. Want to make sure I back up my existing registry settings and such first, just in case.. :-)
