Champion spawn candles - second attempt

Post by +Colibri »

Ok before I start this, let me refresh two rules:

- Drama is not allowed on this shard (as written on the codex)
- Blacklisting players it not allowed.

Also, on the subject of "they didn't approve me". Well, that's why there was the vote. And that's why everyone can say yes or no to a new member, and only if 75% of the people agree, they will be accepted.
To anyone who has ever complained about not being voted in a champ: you came after the champ was half way in, and as per the rules it's up to the current participants whether they want to let you in or not. If they don't, well, that's the end of the story right there.

Now about the issue and possible fixes:
I will change it so that you need to kill more monsters before it advances a level, which will make it all a bit slower and giving the chance for more people to join, though it's not going to make a whole lot of difference.

An even better idea:
When you join the champ, it records the level at which you joined. Based on that, you get a certain amount of points (you came at 3rd level, you get 3 points). At the end, the gold and powerscroll drop is determined depending on which level you came in (chance would just be (16-level)/16 which means that if you come in at lvl 1 you have a 100% chance to get a powerscroll, at level 8 it would be approx 50% to get a powerscroll if you joined - well, that's a low tech version of the forumla, i'd add a curve of some sort, so that at level 8 joining it's still 66% chance).

That way anyone could join in and everyone may get fair share, depending on how far in they joined.

Again, any reply that's not constructive criticism will be deleted. And if it gets out of hand I'll lock this and forget about it and you can enjoy the champ spawns as they are

Those are some interesting ideas, though the system has already improved a lot with higher hp bosses and individual gold shares so I'm not sure they are absolutely necessary. I think if everyone just followed the same policy of "if you miss a champ oh well, theirs always the next one." Then there would never be any drama. hehe

I think the only "exploit" of the current system is that if you come before vote and kill one monster, you can pretty much hide and wait for champ to pop.
Failure is not an option, it's a standard.

I'm not sure how much I like that idea; personally I'm a fan of the way things are right now in not being able to join after 8 candles. Most of the work is in the later levels, anyways, as things get exponentially harder with more candles. The difference between 1-8 candles and 9-the rest is much, much different. Adding things where you get points assigned per damage can be a bit meh, too, as I think it'd encourage people to only look after themselves. I know there's sometimes I run the Newbie Champ spawn where I mostly just sit around healing everyone else who's getting hammered while my Dragon guards me. Sometimes I go a few candles without me or my dragon being attacked, but I would certainly say I'm helping out the group working the spawn. Now, while I'm not sure how much doing this translates over to bigger champ spawns, I'd think the idea would be the same, especially if you're not working only with your own guild.

I'm just saying I think I like how things are more than not, really, but admittedly I'm the type to tend to vote people into spawns as long as we don't have 6 people anyways and the Champion isn't up, so I guess that might be where I go wrong with my approach, hmm? ;-)

I like the current system as it is. Fair for everyone. As well, if the proposed change happens, it won't affect weather I vote someone in or not.

If you're talking about every champion i think the current or older systems was fine. If you're talking about the novice champion then i love the ideas.

I can understand a cold shoulder on a normal champion especially if you put a lot of work into it.

Novice Champion - My view on this is that you learn how to kill champions and how to properly work as a team here. This should be a huge building block and foundation for team work later when you're good enough for a normal champion.

Strict Rules and Scripting makes total sense for the Novice Champion.

Like others before me, Good work with swift thoughts and improvement.

I don't know if this is the place to put this, if there was something i would really like if possible. Is the Virtue System. Are there any plans to bring the Virtue System into Excelsior in the future ?

This, yes, I agree with -- I'd just be a bit too worried about the "Possible No Scroll 4 U!" approach, then. It's a bit demoralizing when it happens as is. It would be nice to have some books set in the safe-side of the Newbie Champion Spawn that explains a bit about Champion Spawns, how they work, and the proper etiquette for running one. As it is it's "Look at this hole. It's empty, and then WHAM! It's full." I understand not too terribly many players are so new to UO that they don't understand how Champ Spawns work, but for those that are it would be nice to see. I didn't even really know what was in the hole the first time I went in there, I just happened to run in right as it started and was like "Woah! What is this?" After a few moments I realized it was the Newbie Champion spawn. Point being: more information possible, the better. Not everyone looks over the Wiki immediately.

if only rule 2 wasnt broken...

i am opposed to the new changes, but you deserve some good feedback for deciding to try to end a currently big problem.

(unrelated, when i logged in forum earlier, it told me i had been trying to for awhile and made me enter a code. so apparently someones trying to hi-jack my forum account. now thats interesting.)

I have found that if a champ is announced in public chat you can get to most locations before it hits 8 reds.

I would bet that most of the people complaining about the candle count being too short are the ones that are too lazy to look for the champs themselves. I have spent countless hours running around Fel in hopes of finding an active spawn only to finally find one and not get voted in. Instead of complaining I just move on and look for another one.

Simply put if you expend the time and effort yourself you will be rewarded as I have found a ton of champs open and waiting for me!

In conclusion I think the current system is a great setup and I think 95% of the people that regularly do champs would agree with that.

Colibri you probably have way more important/pressing issues that would be a better use of your time then trying to fix something that most would agree is working appropriately. Thanks for your continued dedication to making this a great place to play and enjoy! :D
