New Player: Introduction and Questions.

Post by Duke Jones »

Hello All.

I'm Duke Jones. I'm a veteran of Ultima Online (mostly during Renaissance). I also played on the Second Age Free Shard Shard for a few months. I'm really looking forward to the game play and socialization, here.

Please say hi If you see me online. I usually keep and to myself unless someone wants to chat.

While Core Gameplay is pretty familiar to me. I have a few questions that pertain to this shard.

-I want to making a Fishing/Archer character. My gameplay is friendly, non-competitive, and very casual. Based on the economy of this shard, Is fishing a viable profession to make a bit of money and have my own little shop?
NOTE: I have no desire to be the richest person on the server. Just play my little part in the overall economy.

-How would you rate the community here compared to other freeshards?
Second Age was alright, and had a good team behind it, but the level griefers, multi-boxxers, and towns filled with AFK Bots made the community a bit too much, personally.

-Aside from customization, What expansion is this Shard of UO based on?

-Is there a source of info where i can look for the usage/value of the Item I find in-game that i'm not familiar with?
I'm having trouble looking up some specific Items in the wiki.

Thanks for the help, and I'm looking forward to playing with you.

Welcome to the shard. I don't think you will find fishing to be much of an income for ya. There are a handful of fishing artifacts, one really good one. But you have to fish for days at 120 fishing to get even 1 chance. There are some deco items you can get, but they sell for next to nothing. I would say it's more I'd a side business/hobby. But since there is no skill cap here, you can still fish at your pleasure. I would suggest go taming/archer, it's the quickest way to power here. Then branch out as you get established.

I think this shard is missing the last one, or possibly two expansions. It does have most of them, but what it has instead is tons of customization.

The community as a whole is fantastic, very helpful, friendly. Sometimes the champ crowd can get a little nasty, but all in all people here are awesome.

If you need any help in game, [pm Melkor, I'll be happy to spend some time showing you around or answering questions.

You will find many of us are old UO players back from a long break.

Last thing, if you are after a PVE share, you have found the best for sure.

Edit: forgot, yea there is no price guide, but you can always check the prices of items on vendors around town, or use the [c and say PC "item" you usually get decent information.

Taming is the name of the game on this shard.

But I Encourage you to try any other major skill before using taming.Since you're not here for the money, but for the fun I assume. Taming will just get in the way of the fun, like events and challenging game play.

Melee, Magery, Archery, being a Bard, Necromancy, and many other skills are the ways to go for sure.

Yeah people will say I'm leading you astray or that taming is the only way, but then that's all they do all day (most of them); so how do they know? See most of them at and event and they are the ones asking for a res... *shrugs* maybe they like taking dirt naps at an event... or maybe they rely to much on a, b, c, d, and Bob. (Disclaimer: not all tamers are like this)

When the time comes, the value of game play shouldn't be the size of your bank box and what's in it; but rather the list of things you have had fun downing and the titles you have obtained while playing the game.

I for one have melee'd down some of the toughest creatures in the game without the help of pets. But in the end that's my choice. That's the challenge for me, doing it by myself or with a group; as the game was intended to be played, IMO.

Taming will surly get you a pile of gold coins, and doing Taming BoD's is actually a lot of fun, when you're bored of the day to day hack and slash.

That's just my two cents. We have 100 tamers already on the shard... so how about 1 more something else for a change.

Be well and have a great day.
Criticism is good because it improves upon what came before, and solidifies the strongest of foundations.

Believe me, Danilo when it comes to MMO's i'm no stranger to the road less traveled. I still want to live a quaint online-life as an archer/fisherman.

Also, whats this I hear about free housing? There's a nice spot I wish to place a house, but I haven't made the gold yet for it. Not sure how rare open land for housing is on this shard.
