Mining question.

Post by Gareatron »

Does other types of ore come out in random spots? Or is there certain spots that it can be found? I've been mining in minoc and nook town and all I've been getting is iron and I'm at 80 mining.

There are veins for each type of ore. Try CP's mining radar, or you can use a rune library such as Sterling Silver which has some spots already marked for each type of ore.

Never mind about the cp radar just looked it up and its a script. I've tried using those before and I couldn't get them to work. I think I'll just use the runebooks.

In my experience to date the coloured ore spots are static. They do not revert back to iron. Bear in mind as your mining skill increases so does the type of coloured ore you will be able to mine. Many of those "iron" spots you have mined to date may reveal a higher grade of ore once your skill levels increases. If you don't like using CP Mining Radar you can use UOAM to mark the coloured ore spots you find.

If you're thinking about doing any serious mining then give scripts a second try. The difference in output and tediousness is really big, when compared to mining by hand.

As for your question - for the purpose of mining the whole world is divided into a grid of squares, 6x6 tiles*. Each square has a fixed ore type attached to it, assuming it's even mineable. The spots are fixed and don't change ever.

The mechanics of mining are somewhat complicated, but I can post the formula if you (or anyone else) needs it. But basically as far as mining iron goes:
1. There is a number (20% perhaps) of spots that are just regular iron. You will always get that, regardless of skill (unless it's too low to mine even iron consistently). Using gargoyle's pick will of course upgrade it to dull copper.
2. If you exactly match the skill for a resource vein you have about 15% chance to get it, 50% chance to get iron and 35% to get the "You fail to find usable ore" message. Higher Mining will increase the chances for successfully mining coloured ore up to 50% colour/50% iron, no fails.
3. If you do not have enough skill for the deposit (for example you have 80 and trying to mine verite) you will get only iron and no "You fail to find usable ore" message. So basically it's impossible to tell whether it's a vein of something better than your skill or just plain iron vein.

*Same goes for LJ, except the grid is 4x4 tiles.

RE: down
Yeah, sorry 'bout that. I guess I *really* shouldn't post anything if I get back from work tired. I tend to make errors in the most important places. Corrected.

Just checking.
I thought the mining grid on this server was 6x6?

6x6 actually... I mine all the time.. nothing else really except a champ here and there and a few Balrons. CP's mining radar is a must if you want to mine fast. Ill set you up with the proper tools and gear if need be. But you can look up CP's mining radar without Stone on these forums.. Hit me up with any questions about mining. I seem to be one of few that do it on a daily basis

... because people forget that the topics list has pages. Or are too lazy to actually switch to page 2.

Be sure to get the version posted by Elmseeker on page 2 if you have Metalworker's and Stoneworker's keys.
