Pets are good for newer players. They give you a leg up against some of our dungeons and mobs. I know several people who have been here for quite some time that still regularly use pets. A lot of people grow out of using pets once they have decent gear and insta-heal. So it depends how you look at it. I would recommend getting a pack of nobles or mules, then work up to imps.

edit* Also there are bioengineered pets. I totally forgot about those. Best type is a human type, which in turn is the most common. Human bio pets can be geared and have weapons/shield equipped. They can be either casting or non-casting. In my opinion the non-casting is the better of the two because it makes weapon/shield selection easier and I believe they do more damage.

Yes. Taming + Archery + Chivalry = easymode.
Get some mules to tank, a nice yumi (make sure you know about abilities!) and level up chivalry. Without pets you have no chance of doing most Peerless and GoC quest bosses. Start with mules, upgrade to nobles (keep 5 of each tho) and work towards imp squirrels eventually. Pets take all your damage, while you sit there and shoot with a bow. Its grand.
