Sharing UOAM with another shard

Post by Cygnus »

This is for staff and all you geeks out there. For those of you who use UO Auto Map and link into the server, you will occasionally see unfamiliar names logged into the session; names like Toz, Hjallmarc and G among others. What I found out was that these players play on a Shard based in Turkey called Pyramid. They can be rude at times. One chattede F*&@ Cygnus and F*&@ USA. So, if you happen to engage in conversation with them and they act like that, just know they are from Turkey and not members of the shard, so there is no need to page staff to complain. However, how in the heck can they be sharing the same UOAM sessions with us? Is it possible to be occupying the same server address or are they hacking into ours? If so, what else could they hack into? I am clueless about this stuff so that is why I bring it up. :?

speaking of that with the new patch and new lands will there be any updates available to uo automap that can be applied for those new locations? or are we gonna be running blind in lands that have limited exit capabilities?

good point. Might have to print out a map as a last resort and play like we used to before uoam came out.

The UO client is hardcoded to only accept the maps the OSI developers plug in themselves. So, if a private shard wants to add new maps, they must either replace the maps that exist, or "dupe" one of the old maps. If they opt to replace a map, it replaces all the maps tied to that slot. So, if we tried to add a fully custom map, and tied it to the Fel slot, it would also change actual Fel and there's just nothing that can be done about it. Thus, when we were each given our own facet, we had to pick a map that the shard already has so that it would be duped, wiped, renamed, and basically be made into a clean slate.

Thus, Touria is a duplicate of Fel and Elysium is a duplicate of Ilsh. The terrain, towns, etc will all be the same as the parent facet, but all the content and deco will be fully customized on each of our facets. I've seen a few folks griping/bashing these new facets as lame with "they're just a dupe of the other facet, who cares, like we haven't seen Fel or Ilsh before" type grumbling. But there's a reason why we had to do it this way, and I can promise you, you ain't seen nothin' yet ;)

THANKS FOR CLEARING IT UP +Nyx, IM glad you were forced to use a current map for them, i didnt want to be running blind and i foresaw a problem with it if you got an original piece of land. Looking forward to all the awesome deco and content that will be involved.

The UOAM server connection info could have been handed out to others. This is something +Coli could change .. a different port number and a updated password would help this issue but would not resolve it fully.
