There still are wealthy Balrons to be found!

Balrons are very proud, very powerful, and very wealthy. They once commanded the dread of the people, but then a new generation arose which did not fear the Balron. Thrill-seekers, mercenaries, and monster hunters slew the Balrons and drove them out, seizing for themselves their hoards of gold, jewels, and finery.
The Balron, now fearful of man, lost its taste for treasure, hiding away in its den lest it be hunted down.
But there were some Balrons that remained proud. They withdrew to the woods of Felucca, roaming the places betwixt cities where lost baubles and helpless travellers might be found. They amassed to themselves even more wealth than they had before, and their vice only deepened. It is said that the Balron's very flesh grows darker, becoming black as pitch, as they indulge their appetite for gold.
Be wary, you who wander the lands of Excelsior. The Balrons are prowling Felucca even now, seeking the gold of foolhardy adventurers. Take care which roads you travel, and do not think you will easily part them with their glittering store of coin.

On a more technical note: this is an experiment with monsters that gain more loot as they age. More technical details coming later on. These balrons can be found in Felucca: in the woods south of Britain; in the woods east of Britain; in the woods between Cove and Vesper. Some players have already found them, but didn't know if it's a glitch or a remnant of some old content. But they are regularly spawning.

EDIT: Went looking for them this afternoon. Found none. Probably won't ever bother again lol. Searched entire forest from Brit to Trinsic using tracking the whole way. 0 bally's. Must be very few spawned, or I am checking the wrong areas.

Hmm just checked some. Think purposely hunting for them wouldn't be a case, but looks that could be really nice bonus for someone passing by.

I've found one and killed it. Yield was around 21k gold. Haven't seen any more, though. But they're out there.

i found 2, one had 11kone had 22k, are they part of a questline or just random spawns?

3 now. So this is a spawn spot for one of them, just south of Forget. ive cropped 3 images together. 1 of the spawn, 1 has his loot, 1 has his stats.

they hit me for about 160HP from time to time, so not for newbie players.

Also i think 10k/11k is starting point in gold they drop

I have killed 3 of them south of brit... 3k, 4k, and 23k... the 23k one was petty much balk. see picture. I hear it caps out at 25k which kinda makes sense but in the end, hunting them down by hand for 25k a pop even is not really worth it. It would be cool if the amount kept ticking and you might get an 80k check from killing Grandpa (large amounts are already coded to drop as checks). otherwise... it is a nice addition however, once the newness wears off not much reason to chase them down... if the ballies attached to tram/felc treasure chests auto spawned as black dropping 25K that would be a nice buff to T-maps that would be of use.

thinking about it, maybe its a test on a permanent fix to tram balrons. afk recalling around the balron spots might net you really little gold but if theyre left alone itll go higher?

Nice to know what's up with these. Found a lot of them while treasure hunting and wasn't sure what they were. I've been killin' them for weeks once I realized they dropped a ton of gold. Ran into a bunch while doing treasure maps.

They have a lot of HP and hit HARD. (I got 1-shot at one point with ~237HP) Pretty easy to take down with a ranged weapon and some kiting and patience.

@peach, no not a new quest line. The tram side bally routs were nerfed hard (for good cause) by dropping the gold they dropped because it was a massive inflation problem as you could just script hunt them with no effort for hours without ever touching the keyboard.

These ballies 2 things 1) a field test of a idea that has been talked about for a while where a critter gathers more gold into its pack the longer it lives (think these cap out at 25k) and 2) a little bit of if you still want to farm balies for gold here is a way.
