Hey, +C, I am curious, why are the deco items the ones that are limited to one per player?

I thought if this type of item limitation per player was going to be introduced it would be on the high end items, not the deco. I'm befuddled as to why the deco items got this treatment.

will be sold with a one-per-account rule.
You know, this rule could be generalized. A player can only win one item at a price over 100M gold per auction. After winning an item at a price over 100M they're not allowed to bid over 100M for anything else.

I don't know if that would be a good thing or a bad thing. Just pointing out that it could be done.

One role of auctions is to sink gold, that rule would severely limit the ability of the auction to do that. The other role is fun. That rule would increase the fun value. This list, particularly some of the numbers makes for some very interesting reading, especially when you compare to historical prices.

That's correct. The primary purpose of auctions is to sink gold. Let's not put any limitations on bidding etc.

Normally auctions would also be fun but the ones held in the last 6-7 months haven't been particularly fun for some players. To me they have because I love watching items sell for 3x/4x/5x as much as they're worth. Basically, you know one player can't control himself and bids on almost everything so you just sit back and watch the show.

I've been here for almost a decade now and there's always been players that have billions in their coffers but if you look at auction history you've never had a player buy up as many items in a short amount of time as we're seeing now. This is what's rubbing people the wrong way. This player isn't braking any rules per se but...a considerable number of players don't agree with that kind of gameplay. The result? Well...you want the items then you better be ready to pay for them. This works out because you achieve the goal that the auction has which is to sink gold. The issue is the long term impact it will have on the shard and player base. Who will get tired first? Many veteran players that see their chance at auction items taken away or a single player that either eventually runs out of real world $$$ and/or finally realizes how silly it is to dump $20-25k in a 6-7 month period?

I guess we'll see...

You could argue that the function of sinking gold is miserably broken. Because the numbers don't tell the whole story. If 4/5ths of the overall wealth that was siphoned from the economy came from one person over the last 3-4 auctions, and the vast majority of that wealth was acquired in the weeks leading up to, or the actual week of the auction, then it's failing horribly in its function.

While all of the everyday items sit forever and don't sell, people still go out and hunt and over months and months of no auctions, or inability (or you could argue good sense, with the prices we're seeing at auctions) to win a single thing due to one person dominating every single high-end item, we end up with a vicious cycle of gold being hoarded and crushing inflation of future auction items. Doesn't really lend to keeping players, period, new or veteran. There's been no new content for ages here, so without auctions to look forward to, knowing one person has no break point on any of the best items, it completely demoralizes the community and people eventually stop bothering to login. You shouldn't need a 10-year plan to buy a single item, nor should you have to donate tens of thousands of dollars to compete at auctions. Gameplay should count for something, otherwise what's the point?

I think at this point, some of the quality-of-life items that were discussed in another thread are a necessity, to at least keep some gold moving while +Colibri can figure out ways to balance auctions a bit.

That's great to hear. It wasn't meant as any sort of knock, or attack. Just pointing out how important auctions are to the morale of the server, in its current state. And the necessity of gold sinks for the long-term economic health.

I don't really understand how this is failing miserably. He's spending RL money to buy ED and exchange it for gold which comes from other players. That is siphoning gold out of the economy to keep down inflation. The gold sink part seems to be working just fine, it just doesn't seem like it's fun for other people participating in the auction.
