Is it possible to rebuild a pet's stats?

I notice that when my pets die, some abilities are lost from that pet. Are they permanently gone or can the lost abilities be regained? Just curious.

You can regain the lost points by applying ointments to your pet. however the proper additional ingrediant must be added to the ointment first for whichever resist or stat you are raising. The Wiki has a page on the ingrediants for each type.

I think it does, since the damage for many spells (Magic Arrow, Fireball, Lightning, Mind Blast, Energy Bolt, Explosion, Flamestrike and Harm) includes Intelligence in the calculations. This is assuming that it works similarly to players' spells.
