Harabakc's Excelsior Starting Guide
Howdy, I'm Harabakc, a long time player here on Excelsior. I just wanted to pass along some things I've learned while playing here in hopes to help people have an easier time getting started out here.
Initial skills to work on-
Taming - I'd recommend doing taming first thing. Once you get it to 60 you can start using the brushes off the tamers to craft unique and then at higher levels rare pet dyes to raise the skill. Once you have a decent pet you can take on stuff you normally couldn't kill on your own and can begin to earn money. Also, once you get to around 93 you can get swamp dragons. Normally when you try to tame swamp dragons they attack you, but if you're a young player they won't attack you and you can attempt to tame them as many times as you want. Swamp dragons make excellent starter pets, also I believe you can use them before you have 93 taming, so long as someone else tamed it and trades it to you.
You can also get taming jewelry, as much as +10 per piece sometimes, so you can start dyes before you ever actually get to 60. It's common for rings and bracelets to have +taming on them. This post contains some of the more exact details - http://www.uoex.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12
Spirit Speak - The reason for training spirit speak is so that you can use the cleric spells. To access the cleric spells in game you type "I pray to the gods" it requires mana and tithe points to cast the spells(to tithe gold walk up to an ankh and left click it). The thing that makes them so good is that you can heal a poisoned player or pet with them. When fighting monsters that poison you can have a hard time keeping your pet healed if you you're only using magery heals. The 2 heal spells to look for are Touch of Life(standard heal) and Sacred Boon(heal over time).
These 2 skills alone will help get you on your way. You can let your pet do the tanking and most of the damage while you sit back safely and heal. In my opinion it's the most efficient way to get started out, because on your own without a pet it's hard to kill stuff for gold so that you can afford to do anything else. There are always the skill balls that're in your bank when you start that you could use but neither of these skills are too difficult to raise, so if you have the patience it's not a bad idea to save the skill balls for other more difficult skills and raise these normally. If you do want to use a skill ball raise taming as high as you feel like it and then use it(use the skill balls on the hard half of the skill, not the easy half). Spirit speak is really easy, it's just a matter of waiting for the macro, it doesn't cost you anything.
Earning some Gold - Also, if you're needing gold at this point and can't figure out what to do you can kill deathwatch beetles. While you're young their poison won't effect you and they drop decent gold. One thing you'll probably find immensly helpful is the [claim command. If you type that you'll clean up the body on the ground and get a few gold for it. Also when you claim bodies any arrows, bandages, and gold that's on the body goes straight into your inventory all of the other items on the body are destroyed, so keep what you want before you claim. Once you have a decent pet or even just ok melee skills you can try the Bushido Dojo for gold as well.
Once you've established a reliable income of gold you can work on anything you wish, I've just found this to be one of the easier ways to get that income started. Hope this helps.
