Rune Library

Post by Jax2 »

Someone once told me on here, don't reinvent the wheel. We were discussing a new rune library at the time. I guess I don't take advice very well. Moogies library is very handy, and indeed has a lot of runes in it, but I'd like to make one that will be as encompassing as can be. For that reason, I've cleared out the 2nd floor of my home which is 18x36, in other words, very large, with a LOT of room. This will be the new Rune Library that one day, I hope, people will come to love and use on a daily basis.

Unlike Moogies, this library will be maintained by someone who is on a lot, can take donated runes and books and most importantly, advice. For this, I turn to you guys. Here is what I am looking for:

1) Donations:

No, not money, which is always nice but not really needed for this. I am looking for people to donate their time, runes (marked and not), and runebooks (filled or empty).

2) Advice:

There will be a message board in the rune library, and I would encourage people to use it. Is there a particular spot you feel should be added that isn't? Is there a better way to lay out the library? Should there be better furnishings in the library (Which is really not of much importance to me, but it should look nice, really.)

3) Use:

If something of this nature is going to be accomplished eventually, it would be meaningless if no one used it, so, once we start getting runes in place, it would be great to see people coming and going!

Here are some details about what will, eventually, be in the library:

*A comprehensive collection of monster and animal runes... Stratics has a full list of all known monsters as well as their locations, and also a collection of normal animals. I would like to have multiple runes to each mob/animal in trammel and other areas that can be marked.

*A complete rune collection to every city that can be marked. Each city will have 1 book with the top 16 most popular buildings marked for quick access.

*A complete collection of every markable npc vendor, such as tailors, carps, banks, mage shops...etc. These will be duplicates, as they can be found in most of the city collections, but just for quick jumping to a particular vendor type where city isn't so important.

*An extensive resource library for lumberjacking and mining, INCLUDING platinum and petrified.

*A library of all known treasure map spots **Need major help with this from tmap hunters**

*Any other runes that you guys feel deserve to be there.

I am currently looking for people who would like to help here. The world of UO is very large, and for one person to try and do this alone, well, it's not easy. If you have a spare runebook, go to a city and mark all the main buildings, or go to a dungeon and mark major spots there, like, entrance, level 2 entrance, level 3 entrance, and anything inbetween that might seem a spot people may need to get back to in a hurry, or where there is particularly good hunting or treasure chests..etc

All I ask is that if you are interested, leave a note here saying you will do a certain area, and please, read other posts here to make sure they're not done. I've already started and have done Britain and Bucs Den, and that's as far as I am at the moment, but hey, like I said I just started heh.

So, if you want to help make this, it will be by the players, for the players and open to everyone!

The rune library will be, as I said, on the 2nd floor of my house and I will be putting a quick access teleport pad near the entrance to make getting to it a snap. To find my house is equally easy:

Go to House Gates from the CUSTOM section of teleporter menu.

Walk directly EAST past the white telepad, and it is the next one, yellow.

I hope I can generate a little excitement with this!

I agree with Undertaker. Moogies is quite adequate. I think it might even be a permanent fixture.
I really think Lorenth (jax2) is just trying to drive traffic to his new *cough cough* (somewhat overpriced) "vendor mall". :geek:

haha, i have to say tho thats not a bad sales tactic... and actully i think one of the staff took over that house becuz of the nice gesture moogie had done for the shard (the library)... anywho, sorry jax, it is what it is, an not to be rude or nothin but we dont need a 2nd library of EVERY single spawn out there, that would defeat the purpose of finding these spawns on your own and farming em... and it wouldnt be fun to find these t maps around uoex if its all in your library...

exposure is a nasty role in a sort of manor

i havent been to moogies in a long while, but if i remmeber correctly, he doesnt have plat mining locations, why? cuz EVERYONE would mine em, and plat wouldnt be worth much, an those plat runics either...

then you can imagine someone yelling in chat "Whos mining all the #$^^&%@ plat?!?!?" haha... and complain to colibri that we need more plat mining spots... kinda funny and sad, an not to mention true...

Well, some of the books at Moogies are outdated. Especially the animal (bod) books, because they happen to change spawn location sometimes, and the wood books, as it probably changed since last year. 9/10 redwood spots (that gives petrified wood with a gargoyle axe) are located in guard zone and at the second an elemental pops, poof, guards anihilate it.

I say if we can get updated runes to more various spots (not only wood and ore), that is a good thing. And of course, thoses rune librairies are in a shop, why would someone bother to take the time to mark all thoses spots? First time I went in Moogies, I beleive there were at least 20 vendors.

So yah, if Jax can make a better librairy that what we have at moogies (wich would honestly not be very hard to do), i'll drop moogies rune and mark his place.

Ciao amigos!

The spawns are not moved 99% of the time. The runebooks are still quite adequate for the things they will lead you to.

We have in fact comendeered this rune library, as to preserve the information. I would love to one day see a guild or group who would make it their mission to document information, much like the Wiki, but mirrored in the game as well: Library of Scribes [LOS]. It does not neccesarily have to become rune marking, but it could be the creation of Quest walk-throughs, "New player tips for skill gains", "New player tips for hunting", "Bio Engineering", "Breeding 101", "Legendary Tailoring", How-To's, etc. Such written resources would be a great addition to sell to players or for use in creating a Resource Library. This could also cut down on repeat questioning in the chat system. One could simply respond with, "Go to the LOS Resource Library and pick up a guide for <interest> there."

Just my thought: much better for things to be on the wiki, because you know how little fits in those books, also fact is that only the owner of the house can edit the stuff, and not everyone is on the shard for ever. So i suggest wiki :)

EDIT: Although for roleplay purposes, the books are better, hehe.

Aye, by no means would I suggest neglecting Wiki, which is such a great resource to have.

Well, I agree moogies is nice, but I also agree it could be improved upon.

As to my "overpriced" vendor shop, I don't control what people charge on the vendors, I had one there and yeah, some of it was overpriced, so I suppose I deserved that. At the same time, wanting to do a nice thing for the shard that really WOULD be helpful, what difference does it make if there are vendors? Perhaps I'm wrong. As someone else pointed out, at Moogies, there were loads of vendors ... what sense would it make to NOT have vendors somewhere that would receive high traffic? Common sense there ...

Besides, the sheer amount of work involved in creating a LARGE rune library, well, it's beyond just me anyhow, so if no one is interested in it, I'll just abandon the idea completely, because I'm not going to bother marking runes for weeks on end if they go unappreciated.

Yes we can! lol

But it's a player ran thing, we don't like to get involved in those. Similar to the Knights of Excelsior Youth center, it's player ran but all that staff helps with is that we set up that house in britain, and that we can set up another owner of the house if the current owner doesn't come back for a long time.

Btw, although we actually took over Moogie's house once (we had no house-demolition-prevention system), that is no longer the case. Her account still exists and she is the owner of the house. But the house has a historic landmark status, meaning it will never get deleted.
(this status cannot be requested or bought for your house, well at least not for now. We see if any house has really so much importance and assign that status).

i was just wondering if you could add and lock down more runebooks..asking cause if you can then i have a full set of t- map spots
used thb and their map tool and double checked with uoam and trible checked with sextant for cords

4-5 of the spots are 1 tile off thb cords but i figured id go with our shards uoam zero tile cords...shouldnt be a problem since everyone have room for high mining here (gm mining can pop chest 5 tiles away)

If Moogie does not appear for 6 consecutive months, then we will take over the property. At that point it will become "property of Excelsior" so to speak. If/when that occurs, I am sure we could lock down some Runebooks. As of now, if we were to lock down anything belonging to anyone else, it would become property of Moogie herself and would not simply become "property of Excelsior."

I hope that will assist as an explination.

If Moogie doesn't show up?

That's pretty interesting, considering you wiped my guild house and account of someone that was around long before Moogie and also has a historic landmark house.
