Recent disconnects:
I have just called the ISP to ask why these have been happening, to see maybe if the disconnects have something to do with the equipment here on the server side, but the technician said it's their problem, that they are aware of it, and although they don't know why this is happening (they have already tried several things, that might be the explanation of some of the disconnects) they are still working on it. So the bottom line is, it's being resolved.
Otherwise, the ISP is quite stable. It usually has been a 1-15 minute disconnect every month or two (when they do upgradings and they have to reconnect everyone), occasionally there's been multiple disconnects in one day/night, but never this frequent.
The best precaution against a disconnect (on either the server side, or your side), a power failure, or well anything else that could get you kicked, is still to keep your valuable items insured, or to keep them at your bank or home, and to bond your pets so that if it dies at least it leaves a ghost which you can then resurrect.
As for the server itself, it has proved to be stable now, and I have set the saves back to one hour intervals a few days ago.

I am announcing shard instability.
The saves are now every 20 minutes.
I am also announcing a Wipe of Inactive accounts, which will be deleted on Wednesday 23:59 (midnight) shard time (6PM EST, 3PM PST).
I wish i could announce this more in advance but for now that's the best solution for our problem.
After this wipe there will be a restart and this will at least temporarily (a couple of weeks, maybe months) solve the problem. And i hope to fix it by that time.
The words "shard is officially unstable" basically mean that there's a high chance of a crash/revert. You may still play normally, but it's "normal" if the shard crashes or disconnects. Also so you know that the shard isn't normally this shaky. During this time, the world is saved more frequently so that in event of a revert, we loose less. This is a temporary thing, I am making it a priority to get the shard back to it's normal stability ASAP.
I think know why this is happening, but I will probably need an afternoon to fix it, which due to my other obligations I don't have in the next few days. The server reaches 1.54 GB of RAM requirement, and that's where either Windows or .NET draw the line. There's either some tinkering involved with the windows settings, or a reinstaling of the OS, such that will support these things.
If anyone knows (and preferably has experience with) increasing the limit that a process can use from 1.5GB to anything more, please let me know by emailing me to the email listed on the frontpage.
(I already have googled a lot, there definitely are solutions, but i'm looking for anyone who *knows* this).

December donation bonus!
All donations sent from December 5th 2009 till January 5th 2010 will receive a quarter more ED bonus!
Also, the first donation reward will be given to you in a special strong box that can old 1000 items, useful for keeping all your things on your house's porch where you usually recall to drop things.
The amount of universal dyetubs will be proportional to the amount of ED with the bonus included.

It's been almost a week of stability, so in my opinion the shard is stable again. Perhaps it was also due to the wipe of inactive accounts. The saves will be every 40 minutes from now on, we may get back to hourly saves if the shard remains stable for a long enough time.

I am speaking of those times when the houses are lit up and dressed so beautifully for carloads of people to drive by and enjoy.
We would like to offer you the opportunity to participate in our very own Excelsior 'Hall of Lights", where players may have their homes available to players to 'drive by' and view this holiday season.
If you are interested in participating, you need to be aware of the following rules and guidelines:
1. Your house must be decorated for the season (There is no minimum or maximum number of decorations you must use)
2. You must have your house entry page submitted no later then Wednesday December 23rd at 6pm Shard Time.
3. Your house may be public OR private, and is completely up to your discretion.
4. You must agree to allow your home to be viewable until December 30th, 4am shard time. (Decorations must remain up)
5. You do not have to be at home during these viewings, however you are more then welcome to make something more of it if you like.
6. There is no monetary reward for this community service, however I think the reward you will find is in giving others a beautiful display for the holidays.
7. Each home that is submitted will first be viewed by a staff member to make sure it follows the visual rules listed here.
8. There will only be allowed 1 entry per household so that we may accommodate as many households as possible.

First, an announcement about retrieving lost items.
The server does not eat items. If an item goes missing, it's because it was supposed to be this way. Vendors not having enough gold on them, vendor contracts set to *not* renew, items not locked down in house, pets not fed well and went wild, etc etc...
From this day forward, I will no longer search and investigate these things, unless if it's some special circumstances that seem like a good idea to look into it. If you loose something it's possible to retrieve it from a backup using the player service listed on the codex (100ED initial + 10ED per item). If it turns out it was a bug that ate your item, then the retrieval will be free. But so far this wasn't the case.
Think about it - why are all those thousands of ground and wall tiles at the Town Center still there after almost 3 years?
Hiring new manager for the Youth Center.
There will be a vote, but first we need a few candidates. The job is about keeping the place running, getting in donated items from players and distributing them to the newbies, helping out other players, especially the young population.
If you wish to run for the manager of the youth center, please just PM me and write "I apply for Manager of the Youth Center". You can apply only if your account is at least 2 months old.
There will be more info about how to vote published in a week or so.

Keep in mind that, although there is some glamor in it for you, it's also a lot of work and that you shouldn't apply if you are only interested in reaping the benefits and waiting for a promotion, because it's not how it works. We would like to keep the level of the shard to the highest possible, so there's a few conditions you have to meet before you can apply:
- You have to be at least 25 years old and your account has to be at least 2 months old.
- You must have a good standing reputation and a clean record.
- You have to be unbiased, you're doing this to help others and to learn.
- You need to have a microphone, and we require you to have either MSN messenger or Skype.
Please note that we will give a priority to those who can be online more, but please don't exaggerate in your application that you can be online for 6 hours a day and then only show up an hour every 2 days. Also, high profile players have a smaller chance of getting in (if you're very known as a player).
The fact that you're staffer is confidential, so don't tell anyone that you are applying.
To apply, PM me, and write the following info: 1. Your RL age, 2. whether you have skype or MSN messenger, 3. how many hours per day you can be online, and 4. what is your occupation (student, employed, self-employed, un-employed, stay-at-home mom, etc)

Today's hot topic is probably the disabling of travel to/from Felucca, and I would like to explain these changes.
Recalling out: initially it wasn't possible to recall out from Felucca, but we had some problems with lag and also in because a larger percentage of players had slow connections (dialup, satellite). Because of that, I've turned this restriction off, I think it was in autumn 2006.
We have a much better hardware since then (when we were on a Celeron 1.8 ghz, 512ram) and also the internet connections have become better, so I've decided to bring back this (already forgotten) restriction.
Right now it's not against the rules to use the Stuck Menu to get to Fel Brit Bank, it's not instant but it might be a cool shortcut.
There's probably going to be another one or maybe even two extra portals between Felucca and Trammel.
Going to someone in Felucca using a bracelet of binding: This has become a sort of an exploit, players using alternate characters to check whether a spawn is active, and then traveling to that character using the bracelets. I have a better solution to fix this, but it requires some coding so for now i've just disabled this.
Getting biopets using the summoning ball when in Felucca: Biopets are pretty powerful, and there needs to be some more work involved getting them to champs. (Actually when adding these restrictions at the start i didnt even think of the summoning ball). On the upside, when you're done, you can leave your biopet somewhere safe in felucca, and when you get back to trammel you can summon them. So that saves 50% of the hassle.

If you have a sitting area 3 in your house and are bothered by the fact that there's some blood sticking out of the floor upstairs from it, put the deed for the sittingarea3 in your bank, then PM me and you will get a replacement.
Please note that all new sitting areas 3 that you can get from the vendor stone in the deco area, is already the fixed version.

Addenda to the Felucca travel restrictions:
I see that mostly owners of biopets are not very happy with the recent change, but please don't forget these things (that i've written in the post above or in public chat over the evening) that I have now also listed below:
1. There will be one extra, possibly two more hidden Trammel-Felucca teleportation spots. This is also what was initially planned (years ago).
2. The fact that you can't get a biopet onto a boat. It is actually possible in some places, to get a boat so close to land that you can actually walk them onboard. The thing where you doubleclick the plank, however doesn't implement the teleportation of pets, which is a bug and will be fixed shortly.
3. There's an idea about making biopets to walk faster, now the problem is if i double their speed, they will also hit twice as faster, which is definitely not good
4. If this isn't accepted, we'll go back to plan A (as we have it right now is actually plan B) which is that if you summon a pet to Felucca, it costs 20 translocation powder on the orb.
Understand that this is how it was meant to be from the start, but due to some lag issues we enabled recalling out, and then as those issues were fixed, well I forgot and nobody reminded me to put it back

Due to many requests not to change the Felucca recalling and pet summoning rules, I've changed it back to almost as it used to be. Recalling is possible, but if you recall from Felucca your mana will be very slowly regenerating for the next 3 minutes.

There will actually two auctions, but with the same items, and if you have bought something at the first auction, then you can't bid on it on the second.
First auction: Sunday 3AM shard time (Saturday 9PM EST, 6PM PST)
Second auction: Sunday 9PM shard time (Sunday 3PM est, Noon PST)
The items will be displayed an hour or two before the first auction takes place. There will be an item or two that will vary between the auctions.

This should be announced on the 1st, but well, time sure flies by... 
In celebration of Excelsior's 4th birthday, there is a bonus donation reward. Double the unitubs, and if your donation is 30$ or more, you also receive the Excelsior Footwear, an item which in the old days was given to players who have referred their friends to the shard. It is blessed, has 100 luck, and also -10 weight, which means it actually makes you lighter. They are bound to the account, and you can only get one per person.
There was also a cake planned, and there definitely will be cake (there should be one in your bank soon).
And there's also the milestone rewards that haven't went out yet, I'm sorry for the delay but it's been very busy here (school and work).

Yesterday's restart (Saturday, March 20th) featured an upgrade in the support functionality. When you submit a help request (by clicking Help on your paperdoll) you now only have 3 options (general help request, stuck, and language violation report).
The key feature with the upgrade is that, once you submit your page, you can also click the Help button again, and instead of just having the option to cancel or leave the help request, there is now also an option to:
"Remove your help request from the queue, but i wish to be contacted about it when someone is available".
By selecting that option, your request will be moved to a special list of pages that need to be resolved, and whenever someone capable of handling your issue will be online, we will get back to you (probably via PM if we need more info, if you're not online)
Also, if you are paging about something that for example requires a Game Master, but the only staff member online is a Counselor rank, the counselor may move your help request up, so that it will be resolved when a Game Master comes online. And we also have a cool feature to add comments to each help request, so if you give more info to the counselor, they can add the relevant details to the help request itself, so that the person resolving the issue later, might already be able to do it all without asking further questions, or waiting for you to come online.
Another piece of new is that, for several weeks now, personal trainers have been available. Due to the fact they have been unavailable for a long period of time, they will be available for 400ED till April 15th.
