Skill cap

Post by +Colibri »

So there's an idea to add another aspect of the game, which is, gaining of your skillcap.

New players would start with about 1200 skillcap, (1000-1500, something around that). Then, you could further increase this limit.

You could increase it with certain quests, maybe even a % by killing monsters, or by buying "skillcap deeds".
The prices would vary, for example (gold)
50k for a +100 skillcap at 1500-2000
100k for a +100 skillcap at 2000-2500
200k for a +100 skillcap at 2500-3000
not sure on the prices yet, we would have to calculate these alot.

The idea is, that it would take some time and money to get to that "all-gm" or "all-legendary". To add something more besides just macroing it all thru.

Existing players would get better conditions on this. You'd probably start at 2500 or more. Not sure on the exact numbers yet, we would optimize them if the vote goes thru.

I think this would be a good idea, because it takes good properties from both "skillcap" and "noskillcap" concepts. We don't have the instant uberness, but you keep the chance of beeing all-gm, overtime. It's a little bit like gaining experience.
But if there's a bad responce from the public (you are the ones that would be affected by this, us staff don't gain or loose by this), we will not make changes.

Poll runs for 14 days, since it's a big decision.

I dislike it personally, just because after the first 3 days of being on the server, I was WELL past 1000 skill points, but no where close to having money to spend freely to boost them under your payment scheme. I still needed to buy equipment that players made, which ran me 100k alone. And I was able to take advantage of the death watch hatchlings paying out a LOT of money.

It would produce even more cookie cutter style characters than the server already produces. Everyone does taming, so you've got 100 Taming, Animal Lore and Vet. Everyone will pick up magery and necro, so you end up with 100 Magery, Necro, Eval Int, and Meditation. Thats 700 skill points right there. Everyone works Archery(or any weapon), so they end up with 100 Archery, Tactics, and Anatomy. You are now at 1000 skill points, just picking up the basics that you need to solo on this server.

Now I personally used some of the more worthless skills as an easy avenue to stat boost(the Identification skills specifically). With the way you are talking about, I think new players would suffer in stat raising since they would not have much wiggle room to play with in using skills to bring up stats more quickly.

If the shard was at a higher population and grouping was more the norm than it is now, I would have less problems with is, but as it stands, I just dont think its time for this idea.

Money, while fairly easy to get on this server, is still not super easy for the new players. That said, I believe it is time to beef up some champ spawns. Im sure when the normal population on the server at any one time was in the single digits, having MoA be soloable was a good thing. But as it stands, there are enough people on at any given time to get a group to go kill MoA and Barracoon. I cant begin to tell you how frustrating it was when we first started, and we tried to join in on MoA spawns, to have someone say "Go away, I dont need any help". We should be looking to build a community by having players interact with eachother instead of just using [c and soloing all day long. There's a reason the PWNYs pester you for the missing champ spawns, we WANT to spawn The Harrower and True Harrower and invite everyone on the server to come and help. We WANT to help build the community here.

I'm hovering around 3600 skill points right now, I've been here for 40 days and play a lot. Right now literally every coin I make goes to upkeep of everything and breeding pets. I go through about 300k gold every other day just trying to breed up some decent pets.

Even with all the skills I do have, it's not instant uberness. Until I had my taming at a respectable level I was very limited in what I could do, and I have maxed a lot of more or less worthless skill.

I'm not a huge fan of the skill cap idea.

The main reason is that I came to this shard because of the lack of a skill cap. I'm almost at 4000 skill points now and there are still things that I can't run on my own. I'm more of a weapons user, though. I don't do a lot with pets yet.

Instead of putting a cap in place, what about having a couple of areas that were powered up to give a challenge to the strongest characters? Paragon AWs are beasts, so are Balrons... but what about making a couple of dungeons that would be inhabited by beefed-up versions of other monsters? Instead of capping everyone, build a couple of areas that only the toughest would think about going? That way, people have something to strive for without being capped?

if a skill cap does come into play make it somthing like 2.5k or so just to keep it high but make it so you have to choose some skills over others

It would make shard more balanced plus this is such a nice gold sink. I agree with cosima, 15mil is way too much and her system is cool but i would start with 100k for +500 at 1500-2000, 200k for +500 at 2000-2500...

I stay broke all the time, I don't know why people aren't spending money, but there are tons of things to spend it on now.

Am I going to have to go back and spend several million gold to be able to use my skills?

no probably not. we would make it cheaper for the existing players... but from what i've seen on the poll - first all disagreed, now the latest votes tied the decision. that tells that the frequent and dedicated players are against this, and the less dedicated are for this. so unless there's any special reason we should enable this, i wouldnt put it in. was just a suggestion and it seems like it wasnt a very good one :D
