Changes to Mining/Woodcutting.

Post by Danilo Thann »

I have taken some time to read a few, not all-- because there were pages-- of the post about the Mining changes proposed by +Colibri. I feel that both sides are right on the money. Something needs to be done to stop the exploiting of our favorite servers mining and woodcutting systems. On the other hand the populous shouldn't be punished for the few bad apples amongst the hundreds of us playing by the rules.

That being said... I'd like to apologize to any toes stepped on or not acknowledged if my idea sounds a little like some one else's... or for that matter if this issue has already be resolved.

I feel that what has been over looked is the simple logic of mining. Many miners spoke of favorite spots, even hundreds of said specific flavors of a certain variety of mine able ore, which obviously suggests movement between locations. This understanding brings me to my first point starting with the simple logic that in order to mine one has to move from mine to mine, hence the phrase... "Going Mining Be Back For Supper".

Now +Colibri wants to move the mines, so to speak, and this is certainly what the good miners of Excelsior are against. Not only does changing the mine able ore locations sound like a lot of work for the coders, it doesn't seem logical that one day I might find iron ore, and then i may find platinum ore there the next day in the same.

My first Idea is the heart behind this post. I mine a lot myself so changing the mining system would be an irritant. So instead of changing mining I suggest changing the miner. Keep the miner moving by disabling his ability to wait for the next ore respawn. There is a system in place for breeding pets... there is also a delay in days for when the pet can breed again. Would it not be feasible to use this same system, in a shorter time period of course, to delay the miner from mining in the same spot in a 24 hour period. This delay could be 2 to 8 hours, but should be at least 2 minimum in my opinion.

If this could be done it solves the problem with both sides coming out on top. Those that are explioting will find very little in there bags; keeps +Colibri happy... and the rest of us can keep our favorite mining spots, just spend a little less time bank sitting at them.

If for some reason my Logic is mistaken... and the Keepers of the Shard feel it necessary to change the way mining spots regenerate... I suggest the following:

There should be four degree's of separation--EX: Give each Ore type a number starting with 0 and beginning with Iron ore.

There are currently 14 ore types so our example should have numbers 0 - 13 in use.

Now to divide by four parts, but not evenly... one third or thirty-three percent in three equal parts... and of course a left over one percent.

Now using ore type 4 as our standered ore type, look to the example equation below:

X = ore 4 X = 1% chance to respawn for a second time at same spot
Y = ore 3 Y = 33% chance to replace standered ore type 4
Z = ore 5 Z = 33% chance to replace standered ore type 4
A = Random ore, but not ores 0 3 4 or 5 A= 33% chance to replace standered ore type 4

To better clarify what I mean by standered ore type in my example, i am simply referring to all the mining locations as they are implemented currently.

And finally in closing; I'd like to suggest that instead of applying an exchange rate system for lesser ingot types a logical solution be found. I wouldn't be positive to make the lesser ores more valuable then they are now. Furthermore make the rewards more valuable then they are now, from bods, would also fall under that false positive step forwards. Instead what does make sense to me is using the BOD system itself as an example, to create newer ways to obtain the higher rewards gotten from the harder to get more valuable metals.

BOD's require specific groupings of items and such to be placed into the deed before the person is rewarded. What if the reward system also worked the same way. Keep the system as is, reward wise, but implement that by doing a variable amount of lesser metal required BOD's you can achieve the same high end rewards of higher metal required BOD's. And for good measure toss in a few new rewards that require a reward from each of the 14 high end required ore type BODs... Think of the way lesser power scrolls are turned into High end ones as a final example

I thank all who have taken the time to read my post. I hope that it will help keep the UOEX shard what it is... awesome. Normally, and for the last time, I would at this point suggest people to start the flaming here, but instead I say this. Instead of flames try to give credible and informative criticism as to why you object... other wise your probably just talking/typing to yourself...

Criticism is good because it improves upon what came before, and solidifies the strongest of foundations.

Awesome thoughts and ideas. I am not sue how every one else mines, but when i go for specific ingots, I am rotating through my books. It takes me a couple hours of mining to get from first to last spot. A couple hour delay wouldnt effect me at all, a 4 hour delay probably wouldnt effect me either.. OR, I would fill even more books with locations so i could continue to mine a straight line for a longer time instead of four so i could start back at the beginning when I was done. There are enough locations that a dedicated miner could mark 250 to 300 ore locations. perhaps not the three or four top end ores.. but even then I personally have found over 90 Plat locations and am still looking for more. if it takes 3 minutes to mine each location, smelt and move on were still talking over four and a half hours to go through them all. So basically a two of three hour delay would have no effect on the older Vets, and would hinder the younger miners only a small amount, since they are probably "movin on" searching out their locations and marking them.

Mining realistically should be done in certain spots. Iron mines, diamond mines etc, dont tend to jump around much in the real world. They do play out eventually. I think what he is talking about, is putting a certain amount of ore in a location, and when that ore is gone, like IRL you have to move on and find a new location/mine. Since we are limited in space and places to mine, the "used up" locations would respawn another type of ore to be "Discovered" and eventually mined out as well. It still carries enough realism that its not as bad as full rotating ores, and allows you to mark a spot and mine it until empty again... however.. all of this may be moot, as i have not seen Coli post yet on a more detailed explanation of his intended proposal , so it may have been dropped, or he may be working on it still. Lets wait and find out what he has to say and go from there.
