It is going to give people more things to breed and to hunt with for fun. It is in no way going to overpower the shard.
Let's think of more ways to improve things and not try to break them.
This idea does more to break things then resolve problems though, so rather then people running around with 5 imp pets now they are running around with 5 bios? I am sure this is great news to the bio crafters of the shard but to be honest it just sounds kind of insane.

If I was coding this system I would probably take a different approach. In the current system, all breeders have the same chance of success and all species have the same max stats (and all breeders have the same chance of achieving those maxes).

Kill all of that...

(Be warned: I just kind of came up with this but at first run in my mind the theory seems playable just needs to be tweaked)

1. Everyone starts out at zero, each time you successfully breed you get the gen of the 2 animals added together. For a lack of better word we will call this experience points or exp.
2. Need to create a master chart, at certain exps levels as a breeder it effects the chances of breeding, perhaps what you can breed, how high the gen level can be that it is possible to be breed and even how high the max stats of the pet can be when breed.
3. I think a bonus should be given if you are using your own breeder npc, there have been a few threads exploring the idea of owning towns and such. Perhaps this is the first step to allowing players to really build, giving bonuses for limited or certain things based on npcs they control. Example, if you own a npc it cuts 20% of the time off gaining bods if you use your npc, maybe if you own 2 npcs of the same type it also gives a boost of 50 points to the reward chart? A lot of ideas to explore here.

The main points of this system is 2 fold, 1.. someone who starts the shard yesterday cannot start breeding dragons or other top end monsters and be equal to a player that has been breeding for a year. Also, that player who has been breeding for a year can achieve stats with his pets that only the most dedicated breeders can achieve.. high stats.

I think one of the things missing from a lot of shards are goals for many different style of players, GoC is fairly limited in scope.

I wasn't talking about bios at all. Bred pets only.

so here was the original suggestion:
http://www.uoex.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2256

but now that times have changed somewhat, replace "mules/nobles" with "imprisoned pets"

Yeah now I got another sterile. That's running about 1 out of 5 vice the 1 out of 20 its supposed to still be last I heard. Yeeeeaha 4 times to cross gen 3 white wyrms, now one of the gen 4's is sterile. Sure I am crossing for fun at this point but this is just insult to injury... After those mass quantities of steriles the last 7 times I back bred pet lines I an convinced SOMETHING has broken pet breeding on this shard. Broken it badly. Sorry 7 times in a row is beyond the bounds of bad luck. WAY beyond. I never advocated taking away imprisoned hitpoints, I just think it should be harder to get a pack of imprisoned than to max out a breed of pets. In theory all the changes to breeding have been to balance things. With the status of imprisoned pets I think breeding pets should be EASIER not harder.

Oh yeah. Drop back to a gen 3 and a gen 4 cross and immediately get a fail. Some serious intent here to keep me from having a maxed 3 slot pet here...I like Rue's idea of reducing pet slots for a fee on bred pets but since staff never even commented on it when she originally suggested it (that I remember at least) I am relatively sure it will never happen. Apparently encouraging people to breed pets is against the rules...or it sure seems that way.

So to make it crystal clear, I don't advocate nerfing imprisoned pets, I advocate stopping and maybe reversing some of the nerfing of breeding pets. Want a gold sink? Sell deeds to increase a pets breeding times by 1. Make it only possible to use it on a pet that has zero breeds and hasn't been trained past level 1, ie only can be used on a pet born sterile. Want a REAL gold sink sell deeds that make a pet so it cant have stat losses for say 24 hours. Still not as good as imprisoned but it would be a step in the right direction. There is no reason I should be able to only breed a Dragon to 1000/1000/250 with it taking up 3 pet slots. Either make the max stats for the 3 slot pets higher or make the deeds to lower slots. Ie for gods sake give us a few encouraging changes to breeding instead of constantly making it harder and more depressing.

I have also experienced the ridiculous failures when breeding, such as gen 3 (first run) mules, low end dragons, etc. I am currently sitting on a pair of mid-level, far from maxed strupen wyrms which have failed 7 times in a row. Aside from that, certain pets have become extremely streaky with regards to gender. I'm sitting on something like 20 male mules of various levels, and in the time I received those, I've had maybe 4 come back as female. This has happened to a lesser extent with some other types of pets. Yes, I am aware that I can buy gender change deeds from the token stone, but this is yet another silly tax on breeding, when it is already a far from profitable hobby. I don't expect to get rich off of animal breeding, but spending several mil getting pets bred, ointed, restarted due to sterility, bred back down, and finally maxed, only to have those pets go for at most 100k if I can manage to sell them at all, is an insult.

I do not want to see imps nerfed. I also don't want to see people making 10's of millions off animal breeding. Instead, I would like to see the breeding changes scaled back to the point where breeding is at least competitive.

These breeding issues are a symptom of a larger problem. Knee-jerk reactions and major changes to already implemented systems in the name of balance will do more to alienate the veterans than it will to balance the issues at hand. I know Coli is a hands-on type admin, and I actually prefer it that way. I just wish he would make changes in smaller steps, and consider all the possible ramifications of these changes before implementing them. Maybe set up a test world or something, or at least give players an opportunity to discuss their views on particular changes before they are implemented. A "proposed changes" forum for major system changes, with something like a 30 day discussion before the change is implemented, would be a great start. Of course, Coli is under no obligation to blindly follow the players wishes, but this would give us the opportunity to voice our opinions and point out potential drawbacks that the staff may not have considered. +V recently did this with the proposed nerf to "insta-healing", and I feel that this was a step in the right direction. I would love to see more of these discussions take place BEFORE changes are implemented.

Well still getting lotta fails but slowly inching above 1 in 5 sterile rate. That being said I am sure I will now get another sterile baby. Ok that was a bit misleading. That was 1 sterile pet out of 5 pairs of pets. Still 1 out of 10 is double the rate you are supposed to get...

Sample size is probably not large enough to show the true rate, I have no trouble with the current breeding system personally. Works good for me

Well granted I haven't keep exact number but with almost 3 years of breeding on this shard I have just a BIT of a sample rate...Good to hear it works for you. If and when you get 25% or higher sterile rate at critical point of 7 in a row pet type back breeding lines then you will be where I am now.

Latest was finally getting to gen 9 on rune beetles and both crosses between gen 9 and gen 1 failed. I mean I EXPECT fails with maxed pets but the gen 9 is NOT maxed and the gen 1 SURE isn't maxed.

Well just to continue the trend, I failed 2 times today crossing non-maxed gen 9 rune beetles with gen 2 rune beetles.

Yup and now 2 steriles in 3 gens on rune beetles during backbreed. Thats 8 back bred lines in a row I got hammered by a nasty amount of steriles at critical point. And 4 fails in a row on a gen 9/gen 1 cross on White Wyrms. If I continue at this rate, it will probably be 19 fails out of 20 tries by the time I have 2 maxed pets to cross. The Nerfing of breeding pets continues.

Well speak of the devil, my number of sterile pets is down but that probably because you can't have a sterile when everything fails. Either yesterday or day before I got a run with 19 out of 20 attempts to cross pets failing on my account. I don't expect 100% success rate crossing pets but I also don't expect 100% or darn close fail rate. Need a happy medium unless the intent is to make pet breeding effectively impossible.
