Complete Beginner

Post by Truck »

Hello,

I am completely new to Ultima Online (having not played for some 10 years!)

I am just curious of whether there are some good tutorials out there on how to start, what to do in the
early stages, how to acquire useful items early on, and so on?

Alternatively, does anyone have some wisdom to throw my way?

Thanks for all the help!

Hey there,

Having recently been newbie again myself I feel your pain. The http://www.uoex.net/wiki/Main_Page here has some really good information for you. Other sites that are really good are:http://uo.stratics.com/, and http://www.uoguide.com/Main_Page. Both have good information. If you can't find what you want on one, then the other will likely have it. Stratics, for example, will have all the spells listed out for magery, but uoguide will have what spells to cast when you are trying for gains at certain levels.

As far as making money goes, work a craft when you get spare gold. Build taming also. There is no skill cap on this server so as a newbie pets are a godsend.

Take advantage of the newbie dungoeon and training room. They can be found in the custom section of the world gate screen.

Some easy money in the beginning is Apiculture. Bees produce items per day that can be sold for gold.
http://www.uoex.net/wiki/Apiculture_%28 ... keeping%29
You will need:
*A house or apartment to set up shop in. A cheap house is 37k, apartment costs a certain amount per day depending on how much stuff you have in it.
*Alchemy at 90+ to make potions for bees unless you buy kegs for roughly 6k per.
*Beehive Deed. 7400 gold.
*A decorative plant. 2-7k depending on where you buy it from...or grow them yourself.
*A pot and hive tool from a beekeeper and empty pots for harvesting the items.
*A water source like a jug of water.

Easy money in the beginning, but you'll have to grind monsters to get your first hive started.

If you have any other questions keep posting in forums here or ask in game by typing [c your message here. That's the global chat on this server. People are always really helpful. There's a lot of custom work on this server so don't be afraid to ask questions about something.

Welcome, and good luck. ^^

also if you need help finding your way around ask in [c for a tour. Tours can be profitable for the guide so many people will jump on the chance to give them and if they do their job you will know all you need to know to get you going.

Im slowly figuring things out by myself and the links do help.

I was however wondering about the Spellcaster Keys. where do i find them? Ive completed the Apprentince giant rat quest but wasnt given a spellcasters keys (even though somewhere it said that was to happen? So any help with that?

Also, as a newb, where are some good places to go apart from the New Dungeon?

Oh, also, what do you do with tokens? And, what do i do with 'cheques'? i recieved one as a newb but dont know what to do with it?

While im here with a million questions, has anyone managed to pass the Uzeraan quest? Ive killed the 6 minions the wiki says i need to, but no change with uzeraan? Also, if im doing this quest (which for some reason does not come up on ym quest log), does this stop me from doing other quests, ie the apprentice giant rat quest?

Thanks again for the help!

They're laying on the ground around the 'public' minoc moongate. Hit ctrl+shift when you're there and walk around to find them. Might be hidden under some foliage.

Welcome to the shard, glad to have you on board. As far as the Uzeraan quest is concerned, it is disabled. The easiest money to be made here is through escorts. You will find them hanging around several world teleporters, fishing docks and a few other odds and ends places. Just click on them, then select accept escort. They will tell you where they need to go. You just step on the teleporter, select the destination and go there. They will follow and pay you when you arrive. You can do that every 5 minutes. Don't forget to insure your spell caster keys and anything else you feel is to valuable to lose.

If you ever see me in the game, never hesitate to pm me or stop me. I'll help as best as I can.

Speaking of more questions, here we go again:

How do I insure the Spellcaster keys (Thank Jam!)? And how do you 'reclaim' these items if you die?

Left click on yourself and a menu should pop up. Select 'toggle item insurance' and select all that you want to insure. I think it costs 700gp per item. There also should be an option for auto renew which is very handy. However, you must have the gold in the bank for insurance to work and if you die, you must have that much in the bank to cover all that is insured, or else it is subject to decay upon death. If you happen to die and all is good monetary wise, you will see the insured items show up in your backpack when ressurected. Items that are not insured are still on your corpse. Just D-click your corpse and everything will magically go back to where it was just prior to your untimely event. In the instance you do not like dying over and over again, I suggest you train hiding and then stealth after 80 hiding so you can go and reclaim your body unnoticed after you made an unwise choice or a wrong turn. You will not be revealed trying to claim your own body. You will however, be revealed if you try to claim any other kill while in stealth, so be forewarned.

for my new character i did mining.
you can get shovels from the tinkerers in minoc.
mine the ore and then smelt it. if you travel across the bridge east of Minoc, you will find mountains and a cave. it is a good safe place to mine.
there are smelts next to the cave.
after smelting the ore and getting iron ingots make armor and sell it to the npcs.
mining is a good way to build up your strength and dex.
also work up tinkering making your own pick axes or shovels.
buy all of your wanted skills from the NPCs in the shops to save a lot of time and effort working up skills from 0.
note that it is legal to train up certain skills while away from the keyboard.
musician ship, peacemaking, evaluation intellengence, and many others.
fighting in the training room can get you up to 75 in all fighting skills.
if you have more questions, keep asking.
there are many special things about this shard. the only way to know how to use them is to ask and read

welcome to your new home. this place is great and new to anyone who quit before AoS. you'll notice the weapon system is totally different. makes it more unique. if you EVER have a question don't hesitate to pm anarchy by typing in [pm anarchy. i'm always glad to help out if i can. yeah sometimes i answer with something silly. for example, how do i make gold fast. i'd say proxy drops 50k gold each time he's killed. <---really don't go to proxy just yet. but i'd say j/k and tell you how to make some good gold. like bees for example. :) good luck and once again welcome.

I do still have some questions.

The tokens that you get for killing things, what are they for, and how do you use them? Are there any specific things I should aim for?

For those Newbie Cheques you recieve upon creating a character, how do you cash them in?

Where/How do I buy houses and where can they be placed?

Cheers folks!

Tokens can be used to buy items in Trinsic off of the Token Stones there, there are some really nice items you can get from them, As for the Newbie checks im not sure what you are talking about...if its the deed for a young player, you need to find another young player with the same deed and both of you get an item from a list of a few things, As for houses you need to buy yourself a house placement tool from a Architect, 1 can be found in Moonglow inside the Mage's Seat...Then you just search around for a place to build a home, not many spots in tram if any at all, my suggestion is to try somewhere in Luna or Umbra to place a house...Any ? about anything feel free to PM me in game, name is Mystery Man....Hope you are enjoying your rebirth into UO.

I was just curious, how important are the organic material that the rats drop in the newbie dungeon? Can they be gained from any other rats outside the dungeon? And can you get them anywhere else?

What do you do with them, and whats skill do you need? Also, since i got aound 80 when i finished the quest, is a 100 a lot?

Cheers once again!!

They are very important Truck...People use them to make bio enginered pets, since you are new to the shard take whatever you get and sell them in EXEX...there are EXEX boxes located in alot of places like Del, Trinsic, Brit...To sell them drop them in the blue box labeled EXEX then type [exex to sell them and you will get alot of gold and no they dont really spawn off of rats outside of the newbie area but there are other ways to get them and as you get better at the game you will start to need them down the line....you randomly get 80 to 120 for doing the quest but you can also fill taming bods to get alot more than just the little amount.
