A couple of questions from the newbie.

In the blacksmithing menu where you change your matieral at the bottom (For instance it says Iron by default). Click on that.
Select the material you want to use from the new menu.
If you selected a different material but it is still coming out as iron click on the material type to bring up the material choose menu again.
At the bottom of material list it should say "Use Material Color". Click on this. This should fix your problem.

Also, Materials do not really give any extra properties to weapons or armor. Gold will add 40 luck. The other ones only change the weapon damage %s armor resistances and durability

RE: Repairs - Open your blacksmithing menu and click on repair, then target a blank scroll to creat repair deeds. It is best to use these to make repairs.

RE: Crafting for higher stats - You will need to use a gargoyle pick axe to mine, hopefully spawning an ore elemental. They will have a good amount of ore on them, and either a runic blacksmith hammer, or a runic tinker kit. These will allow you to make armors/weapons with better stats.
