Good Starter Pets

Post by Valhalla Taus »

Hello everyone,

UO Vet, since 1997, Catskills, but i havent played in about 10 years, surprisingly i do remember many of the mechanics however.

Anyway, to the point. What are some good starter pets to fight some decent mobs (and what decent mobs lol) My guy has GM taming, fighting skills, etc, but I am working on peacemaking as we speak.

Im wondering what some good pets are that are recyclable, by that I mean if they die, its not going to be to upsetting. Also need to get some pets in the stables to start bonding (if it still works like that?)

Im broke and dont have any money to buy good pets, but just trying to do it the old fashioned way.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you all, and I love this shard so far =]

Hi, glad you are enjoying the shard. :)

Well, if you can't really afford to buy some pets, it's been suggested before on the forum to tame atleast 5 frenzied Ostards, and hunt with those in Despise to make some cash.

Sounds like a decent idea to me and all I can think of atm.

I wish you the best of luck.

thank you for the suggestion. i actually did try that early on, but there were too many and they kept kicking my butt! (still working on stats, low hp =[

But perhaps the peacemaking will help with that. I just want a few that way they can maybe beat down a nightmare or something so i can tame a few of them and put them in the stable

does bonding work the same as it used to? i know you can buy bonding deeds, but can you just feed them and put them in stable for a week, feed them when you pull them out, and they bond?

Honestly I'm not sure about the bonding question. I did try it when I first joined the shard, I fed a couple pets put them in the stable took em out a week later and fed them again. I ended up having to get a couple bonding deeds because they didn't bond.

Maybe someone else can answer that one for you. It would be good to know.

Yes this works. Feed them, shrink or stable them. Then wait a week, unshrink, and feed again. They really dont even need to be in the stable or your bank, a house container works all the same. Hope this helps.

Bonding in the old way works, but its faster (easier) by deed.

Starter pets (maybe rising them by breeding)
Polar bears and frenzied ostards (packinstinct, only melee)

Mules (no packinstinct but bagpack, melee and magery)

Nobles (packinstinct, only melee, no magery)
All above just require one slot per pet.

Some like to use Cu, nightmares or bakes.
Or in combination. But those use 2 or more slots.
IMHO, using mules until nobles is best to do.

Finally using imps (no stat loss after death is their bonus).
Meeting a PK:

Explo....poison....flamestrike....Ingots...
Ingots??
Aye, I ran out of mana :P

*Damned, I really need to tame a GM one day*

Id say do yourself a favor and skip the frenzied ostards. Most of the time you can get non maxed mules for next to nothing. Send me a PM later today and I'll toss you one for free.

I sell Non-Maxxed Mules on a vendor at my House. (Mysfitz By Nature) Listed under SHOPS on the tele. Prices currently range from 5k-75k each. I almost always have a handful of the 10k Version which have Max Resist, and decent Hit Points. With 5 of those mules you could EASILY recover the 50k in gold you spend in under an hour hunting in places like Destard, The Deamon Temple, Doom, and several other places.

Alright, so now that I have more experience with some pets and what nots....whats the big difference between nobles and mules? besides the immunity to poisoning...

maybe a little education on imps? I want an squirrel that will cause mahem and death! I just want to start working towards a goal, such as getting a "end game" (?) pet?

Mule vs Nobles

Mules require less skill to control than Nobles. (80ish Taming Lore for Mules, 110ish for Nobles)
Mules have a Backpack, Nobles do not.
Nobles movement speed is faster than Mules
Mules are immune to Poison, Nobles are not.
Nobles have Pack Instinct, Mules do not. (Meaning if you have 3 or more Nobles, they will easily out damage Mules. 1v1 Mules would do higher damage.)

Imprisoned Pets (Imps)
Cannot be Ridden
Do not have Backpack
Do not have Poison Immunity
Have Pack Instinct
Do Not Lose Stats if/when they die.
Not as fast as Nobles but (IMO) Slightly faster than Mules. (Not sure if that is a fact, just my observation.)
Require several hours of training and/or TONS of Ointments to get them as strong (And eventually stronger) than either Mules or Nobles. (If you were to buy all the Oints/Regs needed to Max out their stats, you're looking at about 10-15m PER Imp.) [Oints drop at random off NON-CHAMP spawned creatures in Felluca.]

Once all stats are maxxed out, any Imp can and will be more powerful than either a Mule or Noble.

Imps also: Double damage, compared to noble, everything else being equal. This is due to them dealing 2x 100% damage - physical and poison for squirrels and ferrets, phys/fire for dogs IIRC.
(Meaning if you have 3 or more Nobles
It's 2 or more. Each additional pack instinct animal over the 1st adds a cumulative +25% damage increase. So two animals have +25% damage, 3 - +50%, 4 - +75% and lastly 5 - +100%. Not sure if it works for more than 5 animals. Does not work across players - ie. only your nobles count for the bonus, not anyone else's. And the pack instinct has to match across pets (you can see it when you lore a pet).

The reason I said 3 or more (For Nobles) is cause in my experience 2 Mules will out damage 2 Nobles even with the 25% bonus. But once a 3rd is tossed into the mix the Nobles far out class the mules.
