If I demolish my house do I get my gold back (the cost)??

You get gold in the amount of the House value. Not all the gold you've spent on the house since the day you started building it. (House Value should be visible when looking at the first gump when you click your house sign.)
Example: On custom houses there is a fee involved when you commit your design. If you did it in stages, or made a few alterations over a long period of time, you've paid that fee several times. That fee is above and beyond the house value, and will not be refunded when the house is demoed.
