Best Weapon Opinions
Re: Best Weapon Opinions
You seem to be looking at this from a fairly narrow roleplaying perspective. Your stance is also skewed by the fact that you are a younger player. Most of the people here that are established (say 6+ months old) don't really have problems with fleeing monsters because they A) use a pack of pets that will chase the monsters for you or B) hit hard enough that chasing after a monster is a very short chase. Not everyone progresses that fast but at the 6month point you should have finished the Mistvale quests which provide a great boost to any new player.
I don't think you will ever see eye to eye with people like Phariah, Asmodean and myself. Even if their was some sort of defense bonus on fencing items like you suggest it wouldn't sway anyone with a couple of relayers to ever actually use them.
Once you get to the midgame range here (defined as 2-5 relayers by the midrange player discussion forum set up by the Admins) you already have insta heals with 220 dex and a fair amount of Reflect Physical Damage. Because of this an added defense bonus wouldn't be seen as any sort of actual benefit. We heal so much that an extra hit not taken isn't noticed.
I am personally sitting on 175% reflect physical damage. I am at the point now that I want to get hit by monsters more because with my RPD so high an added defense bonus at this point would actually cause me kill things slower.
I don't mean to offend but you seem to want to mold this server into your image of how you think the game should be. If there was the old 700 skill per player cap on this server there would be a much wider variety of weapons being used based on each persons play style but because of the custom content things just aren't that way.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
So still to kill high-hp fleeing monster either a pack of imps are required(which seems unreasonable because its just one tactic and often is not convenient unless it's just spamming gauntlet), or following him while he runs away.Tredin wrote:You seem to be looking at this from a fairly narrow roleplaying perspective. For preferring RPD over DCI I'm sure it might worth it, especially without new facets, because you prefer speed over excessive survival. But who knows how much DCI would be needed on the new facets. Maybe +10-20% DCI(or some other bonus) from fencing weapon would be useful sometimes. At least with 220 dex without much DCI mobs often kill me fast when stacked.
What I suggest are just ideas, because I think it would be better if wider range of weapons were useful. Now it's only whirlwind weapons, yumis or (very rarely)ornate axes. In my opinion such changes (when none or only few mobs would flee) would make the game more realistic and better by promoting other "trash/weapon change deed" weapons.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
I love when people bring realism into a game like this. (I've done it too, and I laugh at myself when I do it also).
How realistic is it to be fighting demons on the regular, or building a house instantly with a couple mouse clicks? It's not. And realism has no place here really. While some things do mirror the real world, many more do not. And it has to be this way, or the game just wouldn't work.
If you die, you come right back to life by getting resurrected. Your "blessed" or "insured" items automagically appear in your backpack. You use magic, and necromancy, and chilvary, and cast druid spells, and can use a bow, a sword, a kryss, and ride ethereal beasts. None of these things have any realism what-so-ever, yet they are just accepted because it adds to the game.
Fleeing monsters is way more realistic than aggressive ones, unless you're disturbing their nest, or threatening their offspring, or them. Especially if you are hitting it with a weapon repeatedly. So lets not blame realism for your dislike of a game mechanic.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
Want to disagree on realism: ability to craft mostly anything you use in UO makes it very realistic game. Magic is realistic in any fantasy book also. But you never melee with a bow, at least without some penalty. For example there is a penalty on meleeing with bow in Baldur's Gate.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
You also have to understand that the weapon specials were made for the normal UO. This is a freeshard with it's own spin on the game, but uses the same weapon damage/specials as the vanilla game. The most beneficial specials here are the one that do the most damage (double attack, armor ignore, and whirlwind), not ones that stun, or shadowstrike, etc that would be more useful in the original game or for pvp.
I agree a wider ability to use different weapons would be awesome, but I suspect it would be a huge project to code and rebalance everything. I'd suggest an ED reward to add your preferred specials to whatever weapon you want (which I do believe are available in grand auctions occasionally or maybe it was a destash raffle reward), but then instead of relayering to the weapon with the best specials you would just want the highest base damage weapon (which would be the same problem: ie no variety).

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
I personally don't often use weapon specials, because all of them except whirlwind are disappointing: I'd rather wait 1 sec for fight to end then press 1 button to use armor pierce, unless it's a 1-2 hit fight. But maybe there are situations when it is important to kill some mob fast and I guess it's easier with easyUO macros which activates specials automatically, but my mana regen is not high enough. With such changes, players who use weapon specials actively would search weapons with specials they need, and such weapons would become more valuable.heyyo wrote:You also have to understand that the weapon specials were made for the normal UO. Concerning weapon damage, I believe UO weapons are already balanced damage/specials-wise, with crafted yumi/ornate axe having best combination. Maybe high SSI breaks that a bit, but it can be balanced with prices, which could be similar to the current 200ED cost of deed.
For me, weapon type change deed feels like changing of bits inside of server computer rather then magic. It's matter of realism and fun to use wider range of weapons and to have different types of weapons give different bonuses to player in addition to specials. But I agree that what I propose are rather big changes.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
I want to say at 240 stamina you can swing an ornate axe as fast as you can swing a dagger here, or fire a yumi, which is every 1.25 seconds.
Re: Best Weapon Opinions
As I understand on OSI stamina can't be 240 or it's hard to make stamina that high. As currently everyone aiming for 220 dex, weapon speed could be made more important: formula of swing speed could be changed so 1.25 second delay would be at 240 stamina and 50 weapon speed, and perhaps 1.4-1.5 second at 240 stamina and 10 weapon speed. Anyways weapon damage is not the only variable in damage equation, with spell hits doing a lot of damage.Asmodean wrote:I want to say at 240 stamina you can swing an ornate axe as fast as you can swing a dagger here, or fire a yumi, which is every 1.25 seconds.
I guess things work now, but it is possible without too much coding to make different weapon types useful, stop meleeing with bows and make swing speed more important.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
A pack of maxed mules or maxed nobles will cost you about 1/25th of the price of a pack of maxed imps and will cover the chasing/killing just fine. Imps are more suited for when you are killing peerless bosses and farming GoC gear.Iltar wrote:So still to kill high-hp fleeing monster either a pack of imps are required.
DCI maxes out at 45%, maybe 50% I forget. Concerning those of us that will be going at the more end game content being developed in the new facets, those of us that would be most affected by any change that would require DCI. We will be geared for this end game content (10+ relayers) and we should have plenty of extra points left over on our relayers to max it should it become necessary.Iltar wrote:For preferring RPD over DCI I'm sure it might worth it, especially without new facets, because you prefer speed over excessive survival. Whirlwind being on the weapons is just an added bonus really. The weapons were chosen for the other specials they have. Specials such as Crushing Blow and Double Attack. These are the specials that cause the most damage, whirlwind is just an added perk.Iltar wrote:Now it's only whirlwind weapons, yumis or (very rarely)ornate axes.
You should use them, by not bothering you are only hindering yourself. If you are having problem with monsters fleeing maybe using a special that will kill them faster will help alleviate that burden some.Iltar wrote:I personally don't often use weapon specials, because all of them except whirlwind are disappointing.
Mana regen caps at either 30 or 36 I can't remember off the top of my head. Even if you max it and have armor that will allow for the max bonus of the Meditation skills passive benefit (Leather and armor with Mage Armor effect) you can't just spam the specials at will. Most players have a weapon that has mana leach on it to make up this shortfall. It is why mana leach is one of the big three required by people who are at the mid-end game range gear wise. The other two if you are curious are Hit Lower Defense and any of the four direct damage spell hits.Iltar wrote:my mana regen is not high enough.
Re: Best Weapon Opinions
I just posted my idea, I don't really have aim to protect it against players who don't like it, because obviously it's opinion of all players that matters. But imo weapon type change deed is unrealistic.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
I don't think they are shooting down your opinion at all.
If anything, they are just trying to save you from hours of building up a weapon, only to have it not perform the way you would like it to.
Many of us here have already made the mistakes. Learn from us
rather than make them as well.
My first big mistake, a broadsword (that I still have) that I put 100 luck on, spent 100 ed's to level it from 0 to 10, and 50 ED's for self repair...but it does have a whopping Hit lower defense of 3%.
Most of every possible mathematical calculation of every weapon type and what they do for max bonus, is buried in a forum post somewhere.
and of course, you did create a post that says, "Best Weapon opinion," and asked people what they prefer and why.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
Like Soylentgreen said I'm not trying to attack you, I am just trying to give you more context. That things are the way they are for a reason.
You want more weapon types to be viable, I get that. I actually agree with you to some extent, I've been dying for an opportunity to change one of my melee weapons to a fishing rod graphic and rename it "The Huckleberry" just so I can be using something that others aren't. +Nyx has commented several times about how she wishes the cookie cutter "level nothing but Bonecrushers for relayers because they are the best" mentality didn't exist and people leveled other things for relayers in their place.
The reason things are the way they are is because changing them would require massive amounts of coding. Coding done by volunteers and there are only five admins/gm's on the server. They have other jobs, other things that demand their time, UOEX is a hobby for them just like the rest of us. Most of the things here are the way they are because changing them would be monumental tasks.
After the last storytelling event the admins did a Q&A and one of the things that was said that distinctly stood out to me was when one of out +'s said "Every time I suggest Well maybe if we could change this to do... +Colibri could almost be heard gasping for breath". The coding here is well beyond my skill, most others as well. Things are the way they are because changing them just isn't realistic.
I play here for nostalgia reasons, it reminds me of a time when I was a much younger man who could just enjoy life and the game. I would love to run around barding like I used to with a kryss or being a tank mage with a hammer pick or war mace in hand. That was how I remember this game. Unfortunately if I tried to play the way I played then I would never be capable of doing the things I can do now.
I have 10 relayers and already have relayer 11 and 12 blessed and at levels 71 and 1 respectively. I am approaching the point where I am going to be among one of the most powerful players on the server and if I could do the things I can do with a War Fork, Kryss, Hammer Pick or War Mace I would be all for it. All I was trying to do was help explain why things happen the way they do. Big picture context type things...
If I am rambling or was rude I am sorry, I've only had two days off in the past month and a half and the 60+ hour work weeks have been stressing me out.. I've also been drinking a lot to relax and that always makes me a little screwy.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
2tiggerjlk: I didn't create that post, i'm just posted my suggestion to that topic.
2Tredin: I don't have any hard feelings. I just posted my arguments, and I think that's all I should do. You arguing that in places where you hunt(current facets) you can live without bow by using pets. But theoretically (in new facets) there might be groups of hard-hitting high-hp mobs who will flee, and pets will not be a viable solution, only bow will. Well, I suspect that parry/bushido is lost with bow, but fact is many players still use bow for melee, so penalty doesn't seem to be enough. If other (fencing or high weapon speed) weapons had notable bonuses, people would buy and use them. Only problem is that too often mobs flee, so this should be limited because it doesn't add much to the game.
I think that weapon type change deed is just a solution to useless weapons, and it is not the best solution. I suggested the way to change it that doesn't require much coding (unless RunUO code is a total mess). Truly I don't play long enough to foresee all consequences in balance of such change, it's only one suggestion among others possible.

Re: Best Weapon Opinions
I think I'll state common opinion if I say that it is best to have a weapon with whirlwind special for groups of mobs and a weapon for 1vs1 fights. Best specials for 1vs1 are double strike, double shot and crushing blow. What's the best and latest ideal weapon for this year 2016?
So best weapons would have either both whirlwind and 1vs1 special(like double axe or war hammer), or be better at 1vs1 like yumi or ornate axe because these have highest base damage.
For these 1vs1 specials you want 60% mana leech. Otherwise hit lightning and hit fireball are valued. Overall, different player have very different preferences, but anyway hit life leech and hit stamina leech are only useful on whirlwind weapon because they don't leech that much at 1vs1.
