Items being sold way under cost :(
Items being sold way under cost :(
This is a rant of sorts but I understand that most of the problem is that there is little info on pricing things.
I have been seeing many items priced way under the cost to produce the item. Sure someone will pay 100gp for that otherwise unsellable item that costs 1000gp to produce But is it really wise to sell it at that price? Doing so can really make it hard on the crafters that try to make a living off of such things.
I know it may be easy to pick that weapon off a corpse but when players price the items they should consider how much it would cost a crafter to craft a similar item. If the item will not sell above or around that price then the item probably should not be sold.
When I set a base price for crafted items I consider the costs of materials, the lvls required to produce it and the rate of failure. On top of that I consider demand, attributes ect... Will it sell? Are my prices to high or to low? Just like everyone else I really dont know until I try selling the item. But I will not sell an item if I can not at least make the base price.
So.... I guess all I am trying to say is that people should not sell items at an extreme discount below costs just because they will not sell otherwise. Said items would be a better candidate for giving to the needy or going into the token trash.

Re: Items being sold way under cost :(
So, you'd rather have people (probably new people) pay more for an item, or not have the item at all?
Re: Items being sold way under cost :(
Thats not the point at all. I said you could give the item to the needy.Plus a person starts with 30k
Friends and face to face sales can be a different story. I am talking about public/vendor pricing.

Besides... are you really helping new players by setting prices that will make it harder for them to make money on their own later.

yes, it gives them goals to achieve.amadman wrote:Besides... are you really helping new players by setting prices that will make it harder for them to make money on their own later.
when i was new here, 90% of teh thrill of playing was getting to shop at (expensive) player vendors and score my powerscroll and armor fix.
making things easily achievable deprives the economy, and deprives people of a sense of achievement.

Thanks OldManAlewar, that is pretty much my thoughts as well.making things easily achievable deprives the economy, and deprives people of a sense of achievement.

Actually here I was commenting on Lateralus's post. I was talking about it being bad to set the prices low just so new players could get it. Since the prices would be low when that player is able to sell at a later point too.yes, it gives them goals to achieve.
Sorry that my writing and communication skills are so weak.

Our vendor is probably priced too low, but they aren't craftables and we do it to dominate our (small) market segment so it's not entirely selfless.
Merkon and Elegost by the way, E&M Merchandise.

Re: Items being sold way under cost :(
Prices going up every 5 minutes on everything is really discouraging to new comers and those that have been here long enough to set up a vendor
Besides its fine to have various prices low and the raising costs stop going up every time somebody needs anything. Prices should stay for several months at least and not go up to cost every penny a player has that needs to buy needed items. Dont mean just cos they see something and just buy without really needing it. Now I know a few craftable items need extra pricing because of the items needed to make them. Recipes and platinum and petrified trees being examples. I for one havent got to the part of going where these things drop so I buy the recipes from vendors whenever I see them and can afford to buy. Ill be getting to that point soon as get a few more skills finished
Thanks for listening.

There is nothing wrong with being competitive with pricing
I sell many things on my vendor lower than others. Some maybe even to low.
But I never sell lower than my base costs formula and will occasionally raise my prices if demand seems high.

Thanks for your comments Margret.
I agree with what you are saying. It is a real pain to figure out what something is worth. Since there is little information on prices people do not know what to price things. And price varies greatly.

Re: Items being sold way under cost :(
I have been on this site now almost 8 months and have watched new players come in and make a fortune then drive prices up. When Highroller and I were breeding and selling noble steeds back in the day we charged 150K for a noble and now new players come in and drive the price up to 200K to 300K and that is just simply ridiculous. People need to worry more about having fun in a simple game then being greedy and ripping people of with higher prices than what stuff is worth. Powerscrolls are another. I got a blacksmithy deed for 450K back prolly 4-5 months ago and I seen one on a vendor the other day for 850K and this simply nothing but ripping people off. New players over the last 2-3-4 months have come to the shard and drove prices up to where nobody can afford nothing. I myself refuse to pay 1.2 mill for a taming scroll, 850K for a blacksmith, or 300K for a noble steed its ignorant and stupid and is ruining the game and driving people away because why play on a shard full of greedy people that over charge for everything when there are 100s of other shards where prices are what they should be and people don't rip other players off. This is just my take on things
Re: Items being sold way under cost :(
Thanks for your input dark.
I agree that there are extremes on both ends of the spectrum. And i am not arguing that prices in general are to high or too low. In fact i think they are both because its so hard to know what the value of things are.
I personally am not a greedy person and I don't wish to price gouge in any way. I would like to have prices be fair to the buyer and the seller. The question is how do we figure out what those prices are? Some people just dont know what to price things at. I for one can only guess when i put up a non craftable item.

Re: Items being sold way under cost :(
I have no clue what most things cost. I put things on my vendor for what I think they should be worth or what I remember (with my admittedly faulty memory) someone saying something was worth. If they don't sell, I lower the price ever so often until they do sell. If they sell quickly I'll raise the price the next time I get one to sell.
It would be nice to have a list of what everything was worth to refer to. Perhaps instead of arguing about whether people are over or under charging, someone could put together such a list.

Yes! that is exactly what I have been getting at. But how do we figure out these prices? It would be nice to have a list of what everything was worth to refer to. Perhaps instead of arguing about whether people are over or under charging, someone could put together such a list.
The craftable ones are somewhat easier because you have costs but what about the non craftable items?
On another note I dont think anyone has really be arguing about prices. We are just discussing the problems and issues with pricing.
