Breeding/Training Secrets
Breeding/Training Secrets
Just curious. Anyone interested in sharing how they take their gen 1 pets and transform their offspring into mega maxed superstars, or is this a trade secret? It might be common sense to some but to others it might be as easy as taking that physics test that we didnt study for because we partied the night before.
Information like:
1. Minimum level pets to even bother with.
2. Where to distribute ability points first.
3. When to use ointments.
4. Where is the best place to get ointments.
5. Anything else I am not smart enough to think of, etc.

Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
I think a lot of it comes from looking at the stats and knowing the full set of rules behind breeding. These are some of the things i've come to learn (not confirmed):
1. Pets you can tame in the wild only come up to level 30
2. Every pet tamed has random stats/resists/etc. So you can have a level 1/30 pet having far less stats than a level 1/10.
3. The more levels the pet gains the more ability points are potentially available, although i have seen my pet gain 60 ability points on one level gain. I believe it is random on every level gain.
4. Resists are unlocked at level 9, Hits/stamina/mana at level 19 and Stats at level 39 (info from wiki)
5. Pets over level 42 (i believe) cannot mate any longer.
The following info is from the breeding guide:
When mating two pets, the baby will have stats that are the average of the parents plus a random 1-3 and this goes with everything from hits and stats to level.
It would be good to get ideas on how to better select specimen, etc and to share in some experiences but its also good to just go out there and tame+breed til you get it right and experience everything first hand.
Ointments:
1. There is a chance that an ointment will drop off all monsters in Felucca, the harder the monster, the greater the chance. I've also found them randomly by lockpicking chests in dungeons (Fel and Tram).
2. Ointments when mixed with a specific ingredient will yield a specific result. When your pet incurs a 5% stat loss the right ointment will be able to bring him/her back up to par. This I had just recently learned - for your maxed pet, a 5% stat loss means 950 Str down from 1000 Str. To get it back up you will need 50 ointments and somewhere in the vicinity of 7000 mandrake root. You can also use ointments to raise their stats above the breeding caps (info can be found on wiki)
Hope the info helps!

Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
Simple pet training tip:
requirements - ability to kill an umm (snite works well) and a pet with 30+resists and 400+hits should be enough.
OK so set your trained half decent pet on an umm. They'll go at each other and pretty much not do much damage to each other. Now just set the pet you want to train on the umm. One it gets to the level you want call it off and shrink it. The umm will continue to attack your first pet and ignore the second. Once all your pets are trained kill the umm and end the fight so you can collect your first pet.
I use this method so i don't over train my pets.

Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
Unless it's been changed in the last couple months and I missed it in the changelog or something, it's 9 unlocks the ability to breed, 10 unlocks resists, 20(25 I can't remember which) unlocks damage caps, and 40 unlocks stats(str, dex, int). Hits stamina and mana are always available.

Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
Yes if you train a pet to lvl 43 it cant breed. So 43, 44 and 45 are DEFINATELY over trained if you are breeding. It used to be worse used to it was max level of pet not trained level so breeding 2 lvl 40 pets could give lvl 43 babies that were sterile. But you could only add to strength and dex at lvl 40...classic catch 22. The best way around it was to train 1 to 39 and 1 to 40 so the average level of the babies always fell in the 40 to 42 range. But thankfully that is not required now. Just train both parents to 40 to 42 range and cross them.
Yeah Best to start with lvl 29 or 30 pets so you can reach lvl 40 in a few gens so you can add to strength and dex. If you start breeding with lvl 10 pets you will probably reach gen 9 and have to back breed and STILL not have reached lvl 40 to add to dex and strength. Ie if you reach gen 9 and your pets aren't maxed you need to breed them to low level pets and start over. Because gen 10 pets cant breed. So if you breed gen 9 to gen 1 one baby is a throwaway gen 10 and one is a pretty studly gen 2. Then I usually breed the gen 2 to a gen 9 and the gen 3 is almost as good as the gen 9 and you breed it to another souped up gen 3 and you max out before you get to gen 9 again

Very good advice Highroller. Thanks for your input!
If it is worth doing at all, it is worth doing well.
Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
Yeah, that was a very good explanation. I was kind of hoping it would work that way. I'm sure it takes eons to get a great pet from a crappier one.. but oh well.. Makes the game more interesting, and the pets all the better when you get them.

Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
What about other stats, like Magery, Eval, Magic resist, Med etc do they also average out on the babys or are they reset? Wondering if it is better tolevel, and then work a pet until it is truly maxxed before breeding, or if it wont help, and just level them and breed?

Not sure on other stuff you train up but I know anatomy goes back to zero on all the babies and has to be retrained every gen.

Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
kk, Thx Highroller.
I have a pair of Gen 4 lvl 37 Wyrms that I have Maxed on all skills / resists / and Armor Rating. Four Failed attempts to breed so far, when it is successful I will post what remained maxed and what didnt on the babys.

Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
Breeding attempts can fail? How so?
Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
Sometimes you get a message saying they fought instead of breeding, and it causes a short mating delay. It usually only happens with pets at or near cap, and those bloody fire steeds...
Re: Breeding/Training Secrets
I had no idea. Well, not that I've actually breeded much. Thanks a bunch.
How long would that delay be anyway?
