I've seen several people add spell casters' keys on their vendors for up to 5k lately. Mainly in TC. While this may not be a big deal to most, to a new player 1k gold is an effort to get. Once new players realize the keys spawn on the ground for free at a teleporter, I'm pretty sure most will feel they were ripped off. I'm also pretty sure this will cause one or more players to leave the shard out of frustration from being ripped off ever so often. It's just lame.
Why not make the keys account bound? Not only will this prevent new players from being made fools of, it will make yet another adventure (even if a very simple one) for all new players to have to put forth effort to get the cool stuff in the game. I've seen items be made account bound for much less of a reason.

I don't think they wld be made account bound because people do sell keys with stuff on them. Its a great package container when dealing with bulk regs and such... As far as selling them in tc for 5k .. I agree that is wrong ... Maybe @ some point a "This item is not allowed to be sold on vendors" option can be implemented ... Otherwise just trying to educate people or maybe put up your own vendor with a bunch of them for free will put a kink in the market for them.
I used to put spellcaster keys on my vendors for free to help out new players, but after watching the "Glorious Overlord/lady So-and-so" buy them all out time and again, I just stopped. Not worth my time to go pick them up and the new player didn't get them anyhow. Sad, isn't it?
If you found something lying on the ground that you didn't need, but had value in the real world, what would you do? Sure, some people would try and find the owner, others might give it to charity, others will post it on craigslist, pawn it, etc. This has been the way it is since the beginning of time and if you played UO originally, this made you do your homework. That was a large part of the appeal. Ignorance got you ripped off or killed. Educate yourself. All that being said, I paid for Spellcaster's keys and 5k wasn't a big deal. The way new players can get up to speed here with pets and now with Mistvale, I think anyone leaving over 5k probably wasn't going to stay anyway (or do we want them?). Now, if there is a larger problem with exploiting newer players, I'm not aware of it, but I think that's a topic worthy of discussion if true. Perhaps there could be more written into the new player's guide etc. to help ease this.
I've seen the same and it went through my head to even report this behaviour because I think it's quite wrong to sell Spellcasters keys since they are for free.
On the other hand. If someone is too lazy to find out where to get them for free, maybe they deserve to pay for it And it's only 5K. Not that much, and a good price for a lazy person.
However, I don't really use the keys much now, since my gear has pretty high LRC. Maybe I'll need them later, no idea.
Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with selling Spellcaster's Keys on a vendor. They're free on the ground at a certain location - that doesn't equal "There is a paramount obligation to get all players free Spellcaster's Keys" to me. If that were the actual case, wouldn't they just appear in the backpacks of all new players?
Almost every item sold can be found, earned, or created by other players. If I sold soaked bandages, no one would call that a ripoff but where's the difference? I could cite many other examples of this truth but I hope I don't have to. The fact that they are located somewhere and are obtainable for free doesn't mean that selling them necessarily equals taking cruel advantage of another player's lack of knowledge.
Also, it's no one's obligation to share knowlegde of anything, yet the location of these keys has been shared many times.
and there are many, many more pages like this which can all be found with a simple search that anyone is capable of. And there are people putting free keyrings on their vendors. And anyone who simply asked in world chat "Where d'ya get those red keys?" would get the answer. No greater effort needs to be made to be helpful here.
The times I have seen them on vendors for 5k, they have been selling 1k of a particular reg. I'm sure there are cases in which the empty keys are being sold, but that's nothing the staff feel the need to get involved in. That they can be attained for free is easily acquired information that has been widely posted. If a newbie doesn't know this and buys keys for 5k, that's their choice. If they decide to quit over it later, again that's their choice - and considering that's a small amount to get so bent out of shape about, it's likely that this wouldn't have been the right server for them at all anyway.
I used to sell the spellcaster key for 5K and I don't think I was ripping off anybody. Probably what I didn't mention or you fail to see is that some ppl sell the keys with 1K of each reg like I did... and 10K for the key with 5K of each regs. Yeah, the key is free but filling it is not.
Also, the people that have title like Overlord were most likely people with 100 LRC suits or with max out gear... so I wouldn't care if they bought my keys. My target customer were the people that have beehives that needed the regs to make potions. I even gave free filled keys to new players before.
I haven't been selling keys or playing at all due to time constraint... so yeah, one person less to worry about
